Deck Description

I wanted a deck that focuses on Devotion to Black while having a solid ramp built on green spells. The purpose is to have a different deck and to play cards that are rarely seen.

I have yet to test this deck as some of the cards are still inbound, but I am listening if anyone has advice on how to make this deadlier!

How to Play

Ramp into Fatties and get as much draw engines as possible to keep them coming.

There is a nice interaction with Mortuary and Lurking Predators I am hoping to exploit given the opportunity.

Deck discussion for Rampant Chaos

I'd call Deathreap Ritual an auto-include in Golgari colors. It draw at least one card a round. It's not going to be as bursty as Sign In Blood but unless you're playing 1v1 I'd say more often than not Deathreap is going to draw you a lot more cards than Sign while also helping with Devotion.

It's not a sexy card or anything but Grim Feast is brutally efficient. Note the oracle text is ALL opponents. I've had a board wipe generate me 100+ life with it before.

Isn't Murder strictly better than Rend Flesh? Personally I'd be tempted to just run Sever the Bloodline in that slot. For me at least it's worth one extra mana to be able to hit a pile of tokens or two different people running Nylea or something, plus it exiles so it hits indestructible stuff, plus it has flashback so you can use it again late game. That's my meta, though, yours may be such that instant speed is more valuable than all of that.

Victim of Night is fine but I'd rather pay 1 more and run Hero's Downfall and be able to kill anything including Planeswalkers.

Thank you for the detailed comment!

I didn't follow closely on the last few sets, I didn't know Deathreap Ritual; auto include indeed.
Why do I keep forgetting about Grim Feast? Is it the ugly art? The fact that I want to forget all about 1996? I'll find room for it.
You also make very valid points about my hasty removal selection, I may actually take you up on all these.

Let me know how you like the adjustments and don't hesitate to make more of these pertinent remarks. :)

No die and sac effects like Grave Pact, Butcher of Malakir, or even Dictate of Erebos? These cards can be very helpful to you. I would also personally run up to 36 lands minimum since you do have green and ramp in this deck. Since you are going for a black devotion type EDH deck go with Necropotence.

Erratic Portal would be great for you to return your creatures like Grey Merchant back to your hand and recast it. You can also do this to your opponent if they happen to tap out and can't pay. So this gives you a needed bounce type card.

Thank you for commenting!

I am used to seeing the Grave Pact style cards in decks that abuse reanimation; in this deck it doesn't seem like it would create much of a mechanic. Still I added Butcher of Malakir because the fact that it is also a creature makes it more versatile.

I had not included Necropotence because it used to be banned in my group of players as a Gentleman's rule, but this was mostly relevant for duels and I don't believe it is a problem for multiplayer games.

I already have Mimic Vat that can be used to replicate a come into play effect; I don't hate Erratic Portal in there, but I can't seem to make room for it.

Talking about making room, I would be willing to add a few lands; what would you take out for that purpose?

These are just some cards that I don't find add much to your deck.
Juzam Djinn: 5/5 for 2BB with a ping effect each upkeep. Not bad but really not that useful to you. It doesn't have any type of evasion and can be chump blocked easy.
Nantuko Shade: Good for mana dumping but again no evasion.
Plague Sliver: I am assuming that your playgroup has at least 1 or 2 sliver decks. If not this isn't worth playing for the off chance you might play against a sliver deck.

Now these creatures do have some type of evasion or static ability but I find them pretty lack luster and could be replaced for more of a utility creature or card. (I know they help support your black devotion).
Stronghold Crusader
Vampire Nighthawk

Also Bloodgift demon could replace your Baleful Force, it is cheaper and could play politics in your group. Or just have both of them in.
Deathrite Shaman is kinda meh in EDH but it can give you some graveyard hate (which if other people are abusing graveyards in your playgroup I would recommend you look for more cards like this, AKA Nezumi Graverobber or Scavenging Ooze, ect)
Underworld Dreams for more devotion if needed. Whip of Erebos isn't too bad either for use of creatures.

Yeah, I'd rather run Extinction over Plague Sliver. It all tribals not just slivers, and worst case you can still use it like an expensive Murder to kill something by naming that creature's type.

I must admit that Juzam and Plague Sliver are just personal favourites but would be best suited in other formats, so they found the exit. If possible I am keeping Nantuko Shade, Stromgald Crusader and Order of the Ebon Hand cause the pumping makes them valid threat even in a late game.

Bloodgift Demon and Whip of Erebos seem like very good sugestions, I am adding. All this talk about evasion made me change my Puppet Strings for Eldrazi Monument.

These changes make me happy, but have not made room for additional lands...

Quite a few changes occurred during the actual deck building, accounting for comments received here as well as cards popping to mind or coming up while going through my collection.

I have included more cards that benefit from the ramp (Green Sun Zenith, Steel Hellite, Forced March) and eliminated all smaller creatures to the benefit of more big ones. Phage had to go because I included Lurking Predators.

I also refocused the removal on more versatile and efficient cards like Hero's Downfall, Back to Nature and Bramblrcrush.

Playtest is tomorrow night!
