Deck Description

This Golgari counters decks uses Elvish Mystic for mana ramp. Scavenging ooze to eat the grave yards you're filling to your benefit. Then Corpsejack Menace, Kalonian Hydra, Varolz, Lotleth Troll, Slitherhead, and bioshift to make counters go crazy.

I also beat a really fast gruul deck by bioshifting counters from kalonian Hydra to a mana dork.

Note: Woodland Cemetery is a placeholder til the 27th for Thero Duals.

Edit 8/31: I pulled a foil Scavenging ooze from a pack I got at FNM -- traded for a second Kalonian Hydra! Bye Bye Vraska

Edit 9/2: Decided deck was too expensive for speculation with Theros coming out soon: Removed 1 Slitherhead, 2 Gyre Sage, 3 Deathrite shaman. Added 3 Rakdos Cacklers, 1 Elvish Mystic, 2 Desecration demon

Theros spoilers mean I'm definitely going to swap some other cards in. Sylvan Caryotid x4 will be awesome. I also like the new Gruul planeswalker.

How to Play

It's really meant to be good out of the box, and have enough synergy and power in the creatures that you don't need any certain set of creatures to win, but you can create some disgusting counters with one or more corpsejacks, and those kalonian hydras. I made my sideboard address threats I've faced and felt like were a bit rough.

I have my sideboard done for the moment. -- Pit Fight to take out utility creatures, flying, and other odd threats in heavy creature decks (Like those unblockable hex proof creatures); Savage Summoning and Ranger's guile to handle control and removal; Golgari charm to prevent decks with lots of board wipes, combat token generation, and kill enchants; and finally Elixir of immortality to take care of mill decks.

I've also seen a deck or two that have a fully interchangeable sideboard. A golgari that goes Jund, with at least 10 cards swapped in (blood crypt/stomping ground x 3 each, Exava x2, a few other rakdos and gruul creatures and spells with synergy. I'm looking into play testing something like that too. Something that could modify my existing deck completely in between games during a round, for surprise factor if nothing else.

I know she's expensive but Kalonian Hydra

Here, you inspired me to do something similar.

I like it -- I may eventually do Jund, but for now, the cost of one set of shocklands is sufficient :P. I'll wait to see what theros has for us.

I lucked into a second Kalonian Hydra. Drew a foil Scavenging Ooze from a booster at FNM and traded.

Increasing Savagery? I have a deck that plays off of CorpseJack and counters as well, take a look at it and see if you find any ideas you like.

P.S. also try a Primordial Hydra, it's counters double each turn, and with Corpsejack out, they are multiplied by 4!!!

The lame thing is that Increasing savagery is about to rotate out. :(

Forgot about that :/ Primeval Bounty could generate some counters as well as tokens...

Forced adaptation might be a good card to help keep creatures around longer early game

Whenever i see a deck with forced adaptation and no hexproof creatures it makes me cry.

I haven't ever seen that card before. I like it. I'll see where I can work 2 or 3 in. Vraska isn't working out, so I may drop her.

Please don't add it. Enchantments that don't have much instant value are just asking to be 2 for oned. It's literally only good in hexproof. It just adds more value to the removal in peoples hand.

Hmm. Fair enough. But the other deck I'm working on is going to be hexproof

Please add it... you can bait a cruddy creature with it and let your opponent waste remove cards increasing the chance of others will stay around longer...

Desecration Demon gives you a flying presence and works with your counter based deck. Main or sideboard. Beside that, it looks solide. I made something similar with blue added in and some Master Biomaster, Renegade Krasis. Take a look if you need some Ideas.

I've not seen the deck roll out - though I wonder if you have enough creatures to allow Gyre Sage to really evolve much. The majority are 2/2 or less. I do see how it works with other cards like the Hydra, Bioshift and Corpsejack but it might be something to consider.

Although it falls slightly out of your +1/+1 theme - a Deadly Recluse would offer some cheap flyer defence and populate graveyards for Scavenging Ooze.

Gyre Sage usually hits 2 or 3 evolves.-- the thing is, with corpsejack, it doubles if she evolves from that, and if I need mana ramp; I can shift counters onto her fast. If I am done placing creatures, and going for the kill; I can remove her counters to another creature. (And the corpsejack doubles all bioshifted counters $)

I would honestly remove Gyre Sage. The highest costing card is 5 mana. By the time Gyre Sage will matter, you should have 5 mana to work with.

That's a fair point actually, I don't see much to burn the mana on past mid game. Perhaps look to put in a 'Card Draw' mechanic or look for something to pump, charge etc. There's a green card I believe where you can spend green mana to make a creature you control fight an opposing creature - a great way of dealing with flyers.

Pit Fight or Hunt the Weak is the spell to which he is reffering

Aye you're right, there the ones - I was actually thinking of a creature though. Just looked it up, it's the "Ulvenwald Tracker".

Ulvenwald Tracker is pretty great.

I play tested 4 Mystics, no gyre sages, and the deck just didn't run as well. So I stuck 2 in with 3 mystics and 2 sages. It ran about as well as the 2 mystic 3 sage I had before, but I suppose I have less hefty cost mana ramp now.

I would seriously recommend the Ulvenwald Tracker if you haven't looked him up - the ability to choose your fights is not only insanely useful it's your best bet to take out flyers.

You've only got one scavenge card, so which creatures do you plan on discarding?

0

Pretty much once my battlefield is set I'll discard whatever I have to. Varolz allows some extra scavenge, but really It's usually better to eat them with oozes or deathrite than scavenge so far.

Made some changes to my deck. I removed Deathrite shaman because it just wasn't putting out enough during play testing against various powerful proxy decks. (Hexproof, Esper Control, Mill, Gruul aggro, Slivers). With theros coming I didn't want to spend much on them, I ordered the rest of the deck today (Shocklands, Varolz, etc.)

I can respect the reason for wanting to mainboard Bioshift, but let's be honest with ourselves. Having 3 more removal would be better than a trick card to capitalize off a possible Menace doubling counters. I would shift (pun intended) Bioshift to the SB. I would also suggest Dreg Mangler since he's already got Scavenge while Varolz makes him a 3 for 3 option as well. If you are feeling saucy Kalonian Tusker is a decent option. Probably wouldn't go 4 Lotleth Trolls unless you got Increasing Savagery on board. Well that's my 2 cents. Good luck.

I've had some good luck moving counters around after blockers were declared too. I had dreg mangler In originally. I'll try it again once I've played with this a bit.
