Deck Description

Are you bored? Does Magic: The Gathering feel old and vapid? Got any useless bucks in your bank account? Ladies and Gentlemen, I have solution.
Use your bank account on nearest MtG marketplace website and buy some cheap cards, craft a deck, and challenge your friends! To double the fun, ask your friend to create such a deck too!
The Budget Decks -series is meant for your free time! These are meant to inspire you, and deck's value is meant to be low! (Between 10 and 20 bucks.)

How to Play

So much fun! Slaughter your own creatures, so you can assemble some mighty Skaabs! In this deck, early game creatures are just tools for your late game!

-Skinrender kills or weakens another creature when it enters the battlefield. It can also be sacrificed for the good of Innistrad... Oops, that already went to Barter in Blood reference...
-Fleshbag Marauder, the good ol' meatball, wreaks havoc whenever it hits the field. The Meatball is both your graveyard filler and your opponents' creatures' killer.

Deck discussion for Budget Decks: Fabulous Skaabs

Ah, I remember when Skaab Ruinator was nearly a $20 card. Now he headlines budget decks! Poor guy.

Nice include with the Griffin! He probably deserves to be a "budget" mythic, but he really can be an all-star here. Good thinking!

Perhaps a couple Diregraf Captain? Wracks up the bodies and even chips away at the opponent's life in the process.

Not so horrible idea. I guess I could take that good ol' piece of card and throw it right in!

Was Ruinator REALLY about 20 bucks? Sounds weird.

Right around the time it was released it was. Hung on at about $15 for a couple months before nosediving.

Unless my memory is a lot worse than I thought! :-P

Yeah, it was. And I never understood why. I never cared for it to much. However, a budget deck does it rather well I think.

I opened 2 when it first came out. Felt kinda jipped.

Admittedly though it isn't very often that you see mythic rares in budget decks. Which is kinda cool.

I think harvester of souls - he's slow, and you already have a fair bit of card draw. Plus, there's not a huge difference between a 3 or 5 power creature if they have deathtouch.

Groovy deck! Awesome use of the graveyard!

Northy, want a challenge? :D How about a Cyclops tribal deck? Perhaps assisted slightly by Satyrs, and loads of humor :D Because they have awesome art and flavor text :-) ànd it gives people an excuse to use Eye Gouge :p

I've made more stupid decks too. Cyclops tribal sounds like an interesting theme.

I saw a really cool standard budget Grixis control deck that used the Cyclopes as the win con. Spiffs comment sounds like a Jund deck. That should be interesting. On another note, this deck looks really fun to play, I had some suggestions in the form of psychic spiral and elixir of immortality, but upon further review, it would hurt more than help. What are your thoughts on Chromanticore + Civic Saber?

I posted a version that I hope to get up and running. I actually think I might run it even though it's not a control deck.

Made the deck, Spiffmeister!
It is named: "Budget Decks: One-Eyed Rage".

I hope you don't mind, but in addition to Voyaging Satyr, I added a whole playset of Sylvan Ranger to make better possibilities of getting a good starting hand. Sorry.

Thoughts on adding Returned Reveler?

0

No. All the black cards in that deck are Madrush Cyclops, Lavalanche and Violent Ultimatum.
Don't want to rely too much on the third color.

1,500th comment. I meant for this deck, not the Cyclops deck. However, Clan Defiance could replace Lavalanche.

Another solid Zombie deck. You do them justice, and I do not. :) Speaking of...Creature Challenge deck #12 is done. It is Zombies. Since you rock making them, could you lend some advice for me? Main flaw seems to be...the deck is all over the place. It has a little bit of everything in it: regeneration, search ability, draw ability, board swipe, life gain, death touch, +1/+1 pump, first strike, direct damage...just there seems to be no major win condition. It is pesky, in that, my creatures keep coming back from the graveyard...but it feels 100 percent beatable.

Fyi, I only have to revise my Vampire deck (Creature Challenge #6) and my Creature Challenge decks will be finished. Any help on it would be helpful too. I had the Vampire deck done before I realized that Gravecrawler was a Zombie and not a Vampire. Was trying for the boring Altar/Blood Artist/Gravecrawler deal.

A question...do you always keep your mana curve in mind, when making a deck, NorthernWarlord? Or do you design the deck first...then look at the mana curve, and change cards accordingly? Regardless, your mana curve always looks perfect. I have to say, over the last year (getting back into magic), I think that is the number 1 thing I have improved on. Now I need to work on consistency. My friend once said this about my decks, "Either your decks kick super ass and royally destroys someone by turn 5 or 6, or your decks get completely and utterly destroyed. There is no middle ground for your decks. You need consistency."

Sorry I missed your decks! I will give them a look over. I want to see how it turns out!

0

I check out my mana curve while creating so my decks will get at least 8 early game creatures. Otherwise I do not often follow mana curve unless needed.

3
Posted 14 May 2014 at 15:43

Lol, complete opposite of how I work. I start out with a huge list of potential creatures, then I use the mana curve, among other things, to whittle them down into a deck.

1

I normally create a mock deck list in my head and then work from there.

2

Nice method. I just don't have the knowledge and/or memory to do that. Sometimes I will write down what I think on paper - that's how I made my army of two deck, my izzet deck, and my leveler's decks.

As a side note, Happy 1,500th post!

Thanks guys. I mostly play/build standard which is why I can do that. The chromanticore deck is an example.

Edit: If you guys hadn't have said anything or the post count didn't keep track, I wouldn't have realized it. Thanks Guys. Keep on keepin' on.

Thanks for sharing your method of deck building guys...

I will be honest and admit to being a tool and sheep. When creating the last 12 decks...i have used Magic Search. And particularly looked up cards by their high rating. Example Angel deck. Searched to see which was the highest rated in Magic. Looked at them...then brainstormed on how I could use them and what cards would work/combine/sync with them. I am a poser, lol.

But I usually do the notebook thing...writing down all the decent cards...trying to form a main idea out of the larger list of cards...a theme, and go from there. Much like HokeyPokey :)

Although Wonder is great, it is your only Vintage/Legacy card
I would also say that something like Endless Ranks of the Dead would work well in here
I would also have 2 more Diregraf Captains

Same goes for me. Why have only one card that is not legal in modern. Literally, one card. Ghoulcaller's Chant would work well here. I love the idea of endless ranks of the dead ... so many creatures for the sac.
