Deck Description

So, thematically, now that Liliana Vess is standard again, I thought it would be interesting to play a bit on the story of her journey to hunt down the other demons who plague her - Master of the Feast and Herald of Torment are her keepers for this deck.

~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Calling in her binding contract with the demons, Liliana is first called to Nyx to meet with the Master of the Feast shortly before the Great Revel; his task for her is to bring to him a wealth of spells from other walkers for use in the Revel; it is to this end he hopes to impress the God of Revels himself. The Herald of Torment is meant to be her taskmaster and will accompany the necromancer on her journey to complete this task - to ensure she remains faithful to all of her contractual obligations.

Bringing the Chain Veil with her, Liliana hopes to not only use its power to defeat her keepers, but acquire the Master's sought after spells for her own necromantic purposes. As such, she enlists the help of another Planeswalker on Theros who is talented at spell acquisition - Ashiok, the Nightmare Weaver; Ashiok in turn points her to the God of Horizons, Kruphix - and after treating with one of his prophets, Liliana is sent a dream-vision of Tarkir, where some of the richest of spells can be found. Ashiok likewise agree's to hold the Herald of Torment at bay, woven in nightmare chains, while she journey's to Tarkir on her quest. He asks only that when she returns, of the powers she acquires from Tarkir, he is allowed to keep one of his own choosing; upon delivery, he will remake the Herald into a being of nightmares and release Liliana from the demon's watch.

Upon arriving in Tarkir, Liliana quickly seeks out and finds the Sultai clan at the Qarsi Palace; there, the Naga pledge their assistance in exchange for Liliana's necromantic knowledge. Upon a Kheru temple, they offer to teach her the art of spellsnatching, though it will come at great cost to Liliana as she in turn must give up the Chain Veil in exchange for this knowledge. To this end, however, she intends to do nothing of the sort; instead, she subjugates a local clever impersonator, and forces them to mimic the Veil - adequately convincing to fool even Sidisi long enough into giving up her brood's dark magic.

Now armed with what she needs to complete her quest, Liliana villainously sets out upon Tarkir seeking planeswalkers and spellcasters alike; her quest will not be an easy one, however, as she has already created enemies amongst the Sultai for her deception and more are sure to follow as she seeks out other clans for any magic that will allow her to create a torturous death for her demon masters. And if she is successful - what of Ashiok? Will he turn his new spell and minion upon her? Will she be able to caress enough from the Veil to stave him, or corrupt him more than he already is? Liliana is already in debt, and she isn't one to seek more... as her power grows, so too will her need for freedom.

This deck is really kinda built around that story and is meant for casual play; I highly doubt it would place even at an FNM, I fear the cost of spells may be too high.

The goal is to to play the other players hand, graveyard and library as much as possible - while maintaining some degree of control over each.

Of note, this is built mainly from what I have in my own inventory; obviously, the new 2015 shock-lands and Tarkir fetch-lands may serve better than the common/uncommon lands I have hovering in there; same with Courser of Kruphix, and the extra Thoughtseize's and Hero's Downfalls on the sideboard - I don't personally have any of these, but they can probably be extremely useful. I sideboarded Shipwreck Singer (again, it's a fun card that I love) as it can be somewhat useful in this deck in reducing your opponent's attack power - I've found her useful against cheap aggro and weenie decks, which I perceive be large threats to this deck.

How to Play

There's some ramp involved, mostly surrounding Villainous Wealth. The demons (Herald of Torment and Master of the Feast) are relatively cost efficient creatures - but the Master is going to give your opponent some amount of card advantage if he comes in early-game (be sure to have despise, thoughtseize, or Liliana herself on hand); a 5/5 flyer isn't too shabby though. Some might ask, 'Why 4?' when each will provide additional cards to your opponent to tackle you with; I suppose it's a word of caution when playing him, but if you happen to have thoughtseize or despise on hand, it'll allow you to fix your opponent's graveyard or hand for spells like Psychic Intrusion as well as Lili's ultimate ability. Oh, and Ashiok's ultimate too - Master says draw 4 on my turn, the Nightmare Weaver says Exile them all! The Herald as a flying 3/3 for 1BB isn't bad at all either; plus the ability to be bestowed on another creature to give them +3/+3 and flying is nothing short of fantastic. Losing 1 life a turn in exchange doesn't feel like a high price to pay, especially since we're playing black anyway.

Sylvan Caryatid is a good fixer with some amount of evasion and defense and the Burnished Hart's can help with a turn-4/6-mana jump (while also being chump blockers). Late game, the Harts can help get that extra mana for Villainous Wealth.

So, your opponent. Ashiok is meant to exMill the library and provide your opponents creatures to you as needed. Kheru Spellsnatcher's morph ability is fairly expensive, but mid-game can be extremely useful in preventing and turning around a spell that might be on it's way to finishing you and using it instead on your opponent - or holding that spell until it becomes useful to you (if I read that text right, you should be able to cast the spell as long as it remains in exile, even if Spellsnatcher leaves play). Psychic Intrusion - again, CMC 5 is a bit on the expensive side (on top of being two-colors), but provides a glance at your opponents hand, and the ability to play a card that you forced them to discard earlier or directly from their hand; again, Master of the Feast can help here a bit too.

Prophet of Kruphix - creatures and lands untap on each opponents turn; creatures can cast at instant speed. I would say that as soon as this hits the board, it'll be an instant target - but it's here to help provide some mana advantage on your opponent's turn. If you have an unflipped Kheru Spellsnatcher on the board, all the better. There's only two Heralds in this deck as well, but if you're holding one whiile Prophet is out, he can bestow at instant speed.

The Chain Veil might be more thematic than useful, but I've found that when paired with Ashiok - it can be a +4 loyalty/6-exMill (or +2 loyalty and -X to cast that creature that was just exiled). Again, it's ability at 4(t) is a bit expensive, so I wouldn't depend on this occurring... if it does, I find it's just happystance that it did.

Liliana herself is a fun card to play; discard for +1 can be useful, particularly when you have Master of the Feast out - you don't choose the card that's discarded, but it keeps their hand under some amount of control. Otherwise, if it's getting toward mid-game and you don't have that card you need, her second ability will help get you there. Her ultimate? It's doubtful you'll ever get it to pop; as with using Ashiok and The Chain Veil, it's just happystance if it occurs. Despise and Thoughtseize is meant to help a bit toward that end, but again, I wouldn't depend on it greatly.

A good set of these cards are also built toward getting mana, and fixing mana - the temples are there to help you scry your way into getting what you want or need. Clever Impersonator - love this guy. If there's something that can't quite be dealt with on your opponent's side, well, let's at least even the playing field.

Villainous Wealth - if you're successful in holding off your opponent long enough, cast this around X=4 or 5 and you'll have yourself some interesting things to play with from your opponent's deck. If you've also been successfully knocking out cards with Ashiok, you should be reducing their ability to put anything too dangerous out.

Anyway, that's the gist of it.
