Deck Description

This is a fun one. It's basing on Pyromancy and similar cards that do damage equal to the casting cost of my cards. So I combined those with cards that have high casting costs but alternative way to cast them like suspend or morph. That way I am still able to cast those spells.
Some of the cards will put the high casting cost card into the graveyard. That's why I thought Cauldron Dance would be funny in this, I have some big hitters in this.

I NEED HELP!!!
1) First of, I don't know what the right mix of Pyromancy, Kaboom!, Riddle of Lightning, Erratic Explosion, Kindle the Carnage and Explosive Revelation is. The current mix is mostly basing on the cards I have.

2) The Creature mix is also more like a suggestion - it's very hard to say which of those badasses will do best, so for now I plan to play a wide range of them and look how they do in battle. But I'd like to hear your thoughts on that and maybe you have other suggestions, too.

3) The mana base will change, I'll adjust that last. If you have fancy ideas, especially regarding non-basic lands, shoot. But keep in mind that adding things like Sol Ring would lower the average damage I do.

4) Not sure about some of the choices, especially the off-colour ones:
a) Curse of the Cabal: Very funny in theory but needs two black mana even when I suspend it. So probably not worth the trouble of splashing.
b) Heroes Remembered: I need life and this has a fantastic rate of casting cost vs suspend cost. However, I have no ways to speed up suspend and this one needs 10 turns to get active, I don't think this will ever happen. And if I never play it anyway, I might as well fill up that slot with Dracos.
c) Timesifter also looks nice on paper, however, unlike most of my other cards that look for casting cost, Timesifter doesn't ignore lands. So I will still lose many times and since I probably pissed off everybody with that Timesifter ...

5) I currently run 9 spells with suspend. Is that enough to add Paradox Haze? The drawbacks: Bad Synergy with Maelstrom Djinn and the Haze is a casting cost 3 card that lowers the mana curve and therefore my damage output.

6) I genuinely fear being overrun by weenie hordes ... and don't have a solution so far. Mana ramp, walls, cheap mass removal like Pyroclasm ... whatever it is, it ruins my bad mana curve :P. Pyrokinesis is maybe my best choice, however, I will probably be forced to nuke every single creature that hits play because I usually won't have blockers.

As Always, cards in the sideboard are cards I consider adding or cards that should be added but aren't in my collection.

I really, really like this deck idea. You even use THE GREAT LORD EGOTIST in this deck.

Have you considered adding some madness cards like Fiery Temper? ...Or in the case you want to confuse your opponents, maybe Basking Rootwalla. That's one adorable lizard.

Also, Past in Flames? It lets you play all those cards you discarded from your graveyard, so I guess it could work too.

Problem with Fiery Temper and Rootwalla is their low casting cost. If I run into them using my tricks, I won't do much damage. I would need a spell with high casting cost and low madnes cost. Dark Withering is the only card that fits that bill - this, however, would be a nice addition :)

Past in Flames doesn't work. If it was an enchantment, maybe. But as it is I pay 4 mana to cast it and THEN have to pay the casting cost of the card I want to flashback in addition to it. Since my spells have extraordinary casting costs, this is a no-go ... Erratic Explosion is probably the only card this would work on and even then it's 7 mana.

No emrakul? I am a bit surprised by that. The would do very well here I think. Obviously you probably won't ever actually cast it, but your ready don't have to in this deck. Keeps your graveyard safe, deals tons of damage, etc...

Um... Other cards for protection from rushers... Hmmm. That's a tricky one.

Apart from hating Emrakul with a passion I left him out precisely because I still want to be able to hardcast the spells. That's actually what this deck is about ... also, I don't want my graveyard to be shuffled into my library because that would ruin the day for Cauldron Dance.
I would run Dracos (cost one more than Emrakul and I have actually a chance to play them) if had them but for some reason I didn't find a single one.
Hehe, if Unglued was allowed, I could use Gleemax and deal one million damage, teehee :)

Ok, in that case... You might think about throwing in. Grimiore of the dead. And yeah, I can totally understand hating em with a passion. I do normally as well, but I guess that I yet to be objective when giving suggestions. :). (personally I hate pretty much ALL eldrazi.)

Of course, I am happy for all suggestions, even if I won't use them, because every suggestion, regardless how bad or good it is, forces me to think and revaluate my concept and selections I made so far.

Agreed. :). More ideas can turn a good concept into a great concept. :). To me this looks like a variation of a reanimate deck, without some of the graveyard recursion.

The reanimation I have (just two Cauldron Dance for now) is just a side theme. I also happen to have 4 Pyromancy but only 2 Kaboom!, if it was vice versa, we wouldn't be talking about animation at all since Kaboom! puts the cards on the bottom of the library. I am just working with what I have and the composition might change after the first few games (we'll play over Whitsuntide this weekend). Pyromancy has a big drawback: The discard is at random. But it's the only one of the bunch that an be used repeatedly, so it is about to stay for now.

Of course, the Cauldron Dances might turn out to be so powerful that I'd add more and hence make this more animator style. However, once I go that path, it will most likley destroy the original theme of this deck, because I would then add different kinds of creatures that don't need to be hardcast anymore and somehow I don't want that. Been there, done that. This here is fresh for me (and my buddies) which is kindof important after almost 20 years of playing this game ...

But let's say I can get my hands on a playset of Dracos, then I could see a different direction of this deck. They cost whopping 16 but each basic land type I have in play reduces that by 2. In that case I could focus on Draco and try to hardcast him, but still keeping the Pyromancies and company.

Can't wait playing with this, it has so much potential and room for improvement. Over the years I found myself enjoying optimizing existing decks more than building new ones. Partly because the part where you have to physically assemble the deck has become a pain in the ass but also because it is so much fun to change a few cards and then look what difference it makes in the field. You can learn from this so much ... I can only advice any player to keep around some of your decks for long times and tinkering with it every time you get new cards.

Anyway, I start rambling again, must be my age :)

Played it this weekend and it rocked :) Especially the Timesifter. But it was just one game where I had it which isn't enough to evaluate.

However, deck is still slow in the sense that it doesn't have any early blockers. Which was okay because we were playing 2 vs 2 where my partner is allowed to block for me but the first 4 or so turns are dangerous. Second observation: oftentimes my direct damage spells run into other direct damage spells and support cards. Still doing about 5 damage but could be more.

What this really needs is library manipulation, preferably stuff that lets me put cards from my hand back on top of library (Brainstorm, Scroll Rack) but these will drop the average casting cost even more. So, it would probably be best to go haywire with Scrylands. Too bad those Scryduals don't count for domain because the other thing I really want is to include 4 Dracos (while maintaining the possibility to play them regularily).

hm... just thought of this but living death night not be too bad here. If you are constantly discarding high CMC creatures for pyromancy, that leaves you with a graveyard full of big uglies. even with cauldron dance it doesn't seem to me to be as effective at using that fact. I don't know. just my opinion. :)

Living Death affects ALL players! While it also swipes the board, which might be handy, it brings my opponent's creatures back, which can be suicide in multiplayer. Especially since most of my creatures don't haste, so my opponent's would be able to use their returned ones first.

Cauldron Dance has two big things going for it:
1) It works both on a creature in the grave and on one in my hand. Pyromancy is the only card that requires me to have the high CMC guys in my hand.
2) It gives both creatures haste.

Also, if I discarded a big creatures via Pyromancy, this means I have already done 8+ damage. Which means, two more creatures via Cauldron Dance will probably be enough to kill someone. Please note that I run only 12 creatures.

My initial suggestions for this deck, which is yet another deck of yours I love BTW:
1 - Get yourself some BRINGERS. They all have a CMC of 9 but an alternate casting cost of 1 of each color, and this is a 5 color deck! At the very least get Bringer of the Blue Dawn for some great card draw and a 5/5 trampler!
2 - Get rid of 1 island and 1 mountain and get 2 more terramorphic expanses so you can make sure you always have 5 basic lands available, which synergises well with Draco, the bringers I suggested, and also thins the lands out in your deck so you are drawing more useful cards later on. Alternatively get 2 Thawing Glaciers (no more than 2, because you never need more than 1 and it's a mid-late game card) that way you can be sure to at least put a new land out every 2 turns during the mid and late game, and again it helps thin your deck out.
3 - Oracle of Mul-Daya would not be amiss in this deck. You will always know what you are about to draw so you can plan your next move perfectly (eliminate luck as much as possible, because a bad draw in this deck can lead to a terrible miss-play), and it gets land in to play much faster. If you don't like what's on top of your deck, save a terramorphic expanse to re-shuffle and get something new.
This is probably the most expensive deck of yours I've seen, do you legitimately own all the cards?
4 - You like to play a politics game and you need 5 colors? Get yourself some Forbidden Orchards, they are great in a deck like this, particularly with Blasphemous act.
Oracle would also be great in combination with the blue Bringer as you would be drawing loads of cards, but would always be able to play the lands, and would be able to hard cast your hand full of fat critters much faster. Alternatively Blue Bringer could allow you to strategically discard down to 7 in order to have whatever cards you want in your graveyard.
Also for your consideration (not sure if it fits or not, and it draws a lot of aggro in multiplayer), Kaervek the Merciless. It seems thematically appropriate.
If you want to see a collection of the most OP creatures I could find in the game, check out the sideboard on my Fat Fat Fatty deck. You might find something that interests you.

Yes, I own all cards you see, as I said, that's one of the reasons for those 1-ofs.
The mana base for this one is in constant change because of that, so the cards listed in the lands section are probably not what I currently run. I am eagerly awaiting the next set to be released because that means Theros block rotates out of Type II and THAT means those Scry lands will become cheap enough so I can purchase a bunch of them. This deck is the prime candidate to get most of them.
So far I was torn between "get all five colours and domain for Draco" and "keep it to red/blue/black in order to have a more stable mana base". In the long run it'll be 5 colours, though. This is a deck I probably never retire and instead tweak for eternity. The bringers will have a future here, at least the blue one, as you stated.

I have to trade for the Oracle of Mul-Dal first. Or Courser of Kruphix for that matter because he is way cheaper (moneywise). Then again that GG in the casting cost of Courser might give the Oracle the edge.

I have 4 Forbidden Orchards but they are more needed in my upcoming Oath deck :)

Kaervek seems appropriate on first glance but not on second: It only triggers for opponent's spells ;) Also, I would have to hardcast him, something I don't plan to do. Paying WURBG for the Bringers or 6 colorless for a Draco with domain is the most expensive I can accept.

I'll have a look at your Fatty deck but as I said, they need to have an alternative way to get into play.

Either way, I really think blue bringer belongs in here. The other bringers are good (I really enjoy the red one in my Fatty deck) but blue's effect is superb.

oh, I've just noticed that you removed green from the deck... Otherwise what about Allosaurus Rider? 7CMC and you can play it by removing 2 green cards from your hand. Also the latest Emrakul could fit well (I know you hate 'em, even the new ones, everybody does)

0
Posted 27 July 2016 at 11:53

And how am I supposed to cast Allosaurus Rider when I don't have any other green cards!?

The new Emrakul might fit in technically but the casting cost reduction would never be big enough. I don't run fecthlands, have zero planeswalkers and a combined total of 5 artifacts and enchantments. In most situations he would still cost me about 10 mana.

well, obviously Allosaurus was intended only if you ever think of refilling with some green cards. And the fist was intended for card with high cmc and a not so convenient alternate cost like Heroes Remembered or Blasphemous Act. With green, an interesting option is using high CMC creatures with cycling (Krosan tusker being the best, as it also fetches a basic land). Oh, well, I think I'll give a try at building a green(er) version of this deck.

That's the thing, though, I had green in the initial draft (including Allosaurus) but at some point it became obvious that I had to cut at least one colour entirely. The requirements to run Draco and at the same time as many Scrylands as possible is already challenging enough.
Starting a greener version is a good idea, though! Cut the black and white parts alltogether for the green goodies. Don't forget Durkwood Baloth :)

Got my filthy hands on a playset of Combustable Gearhulks and 2 of them had to be in this deck! They replace one Rush of Knowledge (because they will always draw cards!) and one Erratic Explosion, which is nice early on but at the same time provides a low CCM target for the other cards, which isn't ideal.
-1 Rush of Knowlege
-1 Erratic Explosion
+2 Combustable Gearhulk

The other two Hulks ended up in Hobson's Choice where I think they will help the deck more than the change here did.

Oh yes! The faces of the opponents are priceless when you hit them the first time with Pyromancy or similar and reveal a Draco ... but the first couple of turns are rough. It's actually best played in team oriented games like 2HG.
