Deck Description

This is another "locked standard" deck from a few years ago. This deck is dirty!

The creatures come from the gutter and are made up of either zombies or rats.

This deck attacks your hand, your land base, your creatures - like I said - it's very dirty!

SmallPox is a sorcery that makes both players:
- lose 1 life
- discard a card
- sacrifice a creature
- sacrifice a land

As we're running gravecrawlers (who can come back) and Geralf's Messenger (who gets stronger and returns when he dies), we don't mind losing a creature.

We don't mind discarding a card, as we can discard Lingering Souls which gets cheaper when it's flashbacked and cast from the graveyard!! Or alternatively, we can discard the Gravecrawler, who can easily return when another Zombie (Geralf's Messenger or another Gravecrawler) is in play. So us discarding cards isn't as punishing to us.

When Liliana of the Veil lands, she takes over the game as she can either wreck a players cards in hand, or remove creatures already in play.

Assuming we've cast Lingering souls a few times to fill the air with 1/1 flying spirit tokens, when we play Sorin, Lord of Innistrad, we can immediately create an emblem that gives all creatures +1/+0. This makes the flyers deadly!

This deck is pretty basic, but it packs a punch. Many a game has been lost to the lingering a***holes (aka souls).

How to Play

Turn 1:
- Swamp
- Gravecrawler.

Turn 2:
- Isolated Chapel
- Attack with the Gravecrawler for 2.
- Ravenous Rats (the opponent discards a card).

Turn 3:
- Swamp
- Liliana of the Veil (both players discard a card - we discard Lingering Souls).
- Attack with the Gravecrawler and Ravenous Rat for 3.

Turn 4:
- Swamp
- Liliana activates her -2 making the opponent sacrifice a creature.
- Smallpox ! Both players lose 1 life, discard a card, sacrifices a creature and then a land).
- We sacrifice a swamp, Ravenous Rats and discard a card.
- We flashback Lingering Souls and create two 1/1 white spirit creature tokens with flying.

Turn 5:
- Plains
- Sorin, Lord of Innistrad: Activate his -2 creating an emblem giving all creatures +1/+0.
- Attack for 4 in the air with the two 2/1 flying spirit tokens.
- Liliana activates her +1 making both players discard a card.

Turn 6:
- Lingering Souls creating 2 x 2/1 flyers.
- Flashback Lingering Souls creating another 2 x 2/1 flyers.
- Activate Sorin's +1 creating a 2/1 vampire token.
- Active Liliana's +1 making both players discard a card.

Turn 7:
- Activate Sorin's -2 and create another emblem turning all your flying tokens into 3/1's
- Attack!

-------------------------------------------------------

Alternate Version:

Turn 1: Duress - we look at the opponents hand and make them discard a card
Turn 2: Small Pox ! OUCH! We kill one of their creatures and stunt their development
Turn 3: Lingering Souls (flashed back from the graveyard for a cheaper cost as we only have 2 mana in turn 3 having to sacrifice a land to small pox earlier).
Turn 4: Geralf's Messenger (hurts the opponent for -2 when he enters)
Turn 5: Small Pox again!! (we sac Geralf's Messenger who re-enters with an undying +1/+1 counter and hurts the opponent for -2 again)
Turn 6: Liliana of the Veil - each player discards a card to her +1 ability.

Etc. We really go after their hand, landbase and creatures in this variation

This deck should be renamed "how to demoralize and crush your opponents spirit"

Deck discussion for Smallpox Souls

I always try to work in mutavault when playing around with gravecrawler. Might not fit in here due to your high need for double black, but worth mentioning.

ah man - who doesn't love a mutavault! SUCH a good card!! Especially when you have cards that say "this creature gets +1/+1 for for all rats/elementals/zombies/etc". Mutavault is SOO good for increasing that total as it can tap itself to animate itself to push that "buff" increase up by 1. Love it!
