Deck Description

After playtesting the original have come up with a new version of the deck I want to run in standard. Maindeck is basic midrange deck, spot removal allows for board control while you play the win cons of Desecration Demon or Lotleth Troll.

The sideboard is to be used against control decks, with all the discard I should be able to put down one of my threats and with the spot removal this threat should go unanswered.

How to Play

Ideally Desecration Demon should come down as soon as possible, if your opponent is able to sac a creature to tap it then Burst of Strength can be utilised to ensure the demon still swings. Lotleth Troll can provide early pressure and Oooze can be held onto for a late game swing in health and as a mssive threat.

Against Control I would swap in as much discard as possible, Ordeal of Erebos and Duress should stop the opponent from maintaining card advantage while Mistcutter provides a threat that control would struggle to answer.

Gaze of Granite can come in against any token or planeswalker heavy decks.

I am really trying to get a viable Rock deck that can work for FNM, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Deck discussion for Golgari Rock v2

No comments? Was really hoping for feedback before I spent some money :(

I like ordeal of erebos as it buffs creatures and can make your opponent discard. However as an answer to control I think it is weak. I would look into mind rot for more immediate discard/card advantage. If you simply want it for those reasons. In all I like the look of your deck.

Thanks for the input, forgot about Mind Rot. I was thinking of dropping Varolz as well maybe for one of the Gods, any ideas?

It depends on your local meta. I play Erebos in my devotion deck and it shuts down decks dependant on life gain. Plus I easily hit the devotion requirements for him to become a creature. I have played against Nylea a couple of times and she was never a game changer, it looks like you would gain more from Erebos than the other Gods, I am however biased as I prefer him. If you do consider him I would consider the whip as well for devotion and for the life link, also if required graveyard retrieval. Bear in mind a creature retrieved with the whip is exiled at the end step. Erebos lets you draw too if required, just encased you don't have the underworld connections out.

I have added Erebos in the sideboard to come in against lifegain decks but I am still unsure on the whip. I not completly sold on the idea of thining my graveyard when Jarad and my Oozes are reliant on a full graveyard. The only target I can see for the whip is the Desecration Demon. Nylea I do not think will fit in the deck, my main threats are my Trolls and Demons, one of which has Trample already and the other Flying for evasion so she would not bring much to the table.

Again thanks for the input :) If my budget increases do you think it is a no brainer to put in Kalonian Hydra and Thoughtseize?

Aetherlings are a pain, SB some Pithing Needles to stop him. Or wait for the rare occasion where they tap out and kill spell them. Thoughtseize is a must add if you expand your budget and I see your point regarding the whip.

What would I sub out for the Pithing Needles? And would Thoughtseize be a straight swap for Duress? Many thanks for the input again, I am liking the way this deck is developing :)

Pithing Needles in for Mind Rot or Fade into antiquity. I have SB'd Pithing Needle over Mind Rot and not looked back. Duress and Thoughtseize are straight swaps too you probably won't need both. I am working on this at the moment for my devotion deck.

Took out Mind Rot for the Pithing Needles, I have Down//Dirty for the additional discard and I want to keep Fade to Antiquity so I have an answer to Gods. Will have a look at your devotion deck as I am struggling to make one of my own for casual play :)

I have to say this looks like a solid deck. Your sideboard has a lot of answers to different types of decks and the main deck looks strong. I say you have a great version of the Rock Archetype. Will be interested to know how it plays.

With addition of Thoughtseize and the budget going out the window have added Deathrite Shamans in for the Experiment ones, not as good a blocker but a better card all round I believe :)

Great addition, I went up against it the other day and it really did mess with my game plan. Your deck looks a lot stronger now.

Almost got all the cards to run this deck but might proxy it this weekend. Have given some more thought and have decided aginst running the Pithing Needles. My reason for this is the Mistcutters, forgot that protection from Blue will just stop an aetherling their tracks lol. Have upped my Thoughtseizes and Down//Dirtys in place of the Needles

Damn just realised that aetherlings can make themselves unblockable, so scrap that idea :(

Ha Ha, glad you picked up on the unblockable on the Aetherlings, they are slippery critters. I would have strongly recommended that you kept them any way as a back up to shut down planeswalkers or any other particularly annoying card that you may cone across. I have recently come up against one called trading post. Someone playing U/W control in my group is running these to great effect.

One thing with my local Meta is the prevalence of Aetherlings. Is there anyway to combat these things? the only thing I can think of is Pithing Needle, besides land destruction (to stop it flickering) are there any other options?

I would increase the Scavenging Ooze to 4 he synergizes extremely well with Lotleth Troll I myself have a Golgari Aggro that the two togethor and they trolled. I am not a hige fan of Jarad and Erebos in this deck I feel loke Dreg Mangler, Experiment One, and Whip would be a tad Better, even Vorolz seems better. Kolonian Hydra and whip can be detremental to any opponent too!

Was considering the whip but as Jarad and the ooze rely on the graveyard was reluctant to put it into the deck. The reason behind Jarad was that he can sac a Desecration Demon after it has swung to provide a mass amount of damage. Erebos is more for the card draw and did start off in my side board but has made his way into the main deck. I like the hydra and whip idea though and was thinking of brewing an aggro deck for my second Standard deck which this might suite perfectly. The Lotleth Troll while synergising well with the ooze tends not to get too big with his ability. In the test games I have had I have found him more useful as being a resilient blocker with his cheap regen. Thanks for the idea for the aggro deck though, Was struggling for ideas on that recently :)

Made a slight change after extensive playtesting, the Troll is out as I did't want to be emptying my hand. and I needed some ramp to get to Jarad and the Demons quicker. will see how this goes at FNM and report back.
