First I wanted to do Drain Life as a sole win condition. Then I realized that it would be a better idea to do something else that synergizes with Drain LIfe, so I was like, "well, I'm going to have lots of Swamps, so Corrupt would work well". From there, logic told me that Gray Merchant went well with the Corrupt theme, and then it spiralled horribly out of control and now we're here. It's my first deck, it's budget as fuck, it's legal in Modern and Extended, and I'm fairly happy with it. Suggestions welcome as long as they're legal in Modern and won't financially ruin me. (Yes, yes, I know; Phyrexian Obliterators would be pretty good but they cost more than the combined cost of everything in this deck.)
**I'm never entirely happy with this deck so I'm changing it constantly. If I'm describing how to use a card that isn't in this deck then that just means that I replaced the card with something else and haven't gotten to changing the how to play yet.**Just do everything you would normally do with a black devotion deck. Get out your Crypt Ghast and use Extort with Gray Merchant and Corrupt. Basilica Screechers also help with Extort Abuse, but mostly the Crypt Ghasts because you can actually afford to Extort expensive shit like Corrupt. Speaking of Corrupt, it can win you games but not as decidedly as Drain Life + Crypt Ghast or Gray Merchant so just use it as liberally as you feel like. If you reach its casting cost but still have more land in your hand try to hold off until you play all your lands. Gatekeepers work like Geth's Verdict but also give you devotion (Geth's Verdict isn't really useful as an instant since you can't target shit anyway). Geralf's Messanger is a less expensive substitute for fucking Nightveil Spector (honestly I think he's better anyway and fits with the drain life theme more). Basilica Screecher, if you can keep it alive, synergizes well with Crypt Ghast. Double Extort plus the mana you need in order to do so. It might not seem that amazing but a 6 Swamp Corrupt turns into 8 damage instead of 6 so that's pretty significant. Underworld Connections = devotion and draw, obviously. Doom Blade for removal, to be switched out for Geth's Verdict if I'm facing against black. Rain of Filth is for when I'm at the end of a long string of losses and I just want to do something all-in-ish and stupid. Read the Bones in case I decide I want it, and Exsanguate for Multiplayer.
