Deck Description

Synergies:

Sundial of the Infinite + Mimic Vat = tokens that stay on the battlefield.

Sundial of the Infinite + Glimmerpoint Stag = permanent exile.

Sundial of the Infinite + Mimic Vat + Glimmerpoint Stag = permanent exile and a 3/3 vigilant and haste creature that stays on the battlefield.

Sundial of the Infinite + Venser, the Sojourner + Oblivion Ring = repeating permanent exile.

Why these work:

It's all about the timing of activating Sundial of the Infinite

Both Mimic Vat and Glimmerpoint Stag have delayed triggered abilities which trigger once and only once. Thus, you allow the delayed triggered abilities to go on the stack during the end step, then activate Sundial of the Infinite to exile those abilities and they will never trigger again. This means that for Mimic Vat the tokens will stay on the battlefield indefinitely. As for Glimmerpoint Stag the permanent will stay in exile for the rest of the game.

The Vensor/O-Ring combo is slightly different. After casting Oblivion Ring you allow it to resolve and enter the battlefield, exiling a permanent. Then, during your second main phase, you exile it with Venser, the Sojourner Then Oblivion Ring's second triggered ability will go on the stack and you activate Sundial of the Infinite in response, exiling the ability so the permanent is exiled for the rest of the game. Now, since the end step never occurred, Oblivion Ring will return to the battlefield at the next end step, which will be your opponent's. Rinse and repeat.

Win conditions:

Sun Titan Also the tokens created by Mimic Vat

Also thanks a ton to all that have supported my deck so far. This is my first front page and I Am really excited about it.

I have made adjustments to make this more competitive with out losing its flavor. I added in Blade Splicer cause blink him with venser and I have a small army. Also added in stonehorn to main board for more of a control factor. Took out Mimic vat felt that it slowed the deck down way to much. Now it is Truly smooth.

Sundial is one of the most interesting cards I've seen, and I'm glad people are paying attention to it. Knowledge Pool was another interesting card, but wound up being left in the dark for the most part.

Good combos built in here, but what will you do when you don't draw a Sundial? There's not really much for you to do without it.. I'd consider adding a bit more creature presence or control in there before you take it to FNM. Gideon's Lawkeeper, things like that.

I think it has potential to run the table. As soon as sundial is out with a spellskite in front of it. It can be lights out quick.

I love the concept of this deck. A friend of mine was trying to build a deck around stonehorn dignitary and vensser for the obvious exploit. With that being said however, I feel like this deck will play out really slowly. ANything very aggressive and fast would most likely be near lethal damage by the time this started to work if a spellskite is not in your first hand and or second turn.

0
Posted 18 July 2011 at 18:55

I agree but when it gets there its hard to stop. I have set on less than 5 life several games and came back to win on like turn 15. It does play slow but if played right they cant keep creatures on the battlefield because of oblivion ring combo.

0
Posted 18 July 2011 at 19:34

Very true. It has been the case that i've seen recently where Red is a bit dominant after m12. I can easily see a red deck wins build just burning you for the last 5 whenever the combo kicks in.

Not knocking down the deck, I love the concept like I said I am just very weary os anything that starts slow in the current standard block.

0

I agree i am as well. Love the concept and it will be really fun to play. Not to worried about burn decks though. With spellskite and sundial's ability's it can fizzle all spells.

Hey you had posted on my stonehorn lockdown deck and mentioned the sundial and showed me a link to this deck you made, i left you a comment on my post talking about your deck, and here are my thoughts. :)

ehhh--- As cool as sundial is, I honeslty don't think the card is half as good as people make it out to be. Although there are brutally awesome combos with it, I agree, the decks with it, I feel, lack consistency.

as far as your deck goes, here's what I think of each card and it's interaction w/ others.

sundial + venser + card_name_here ==> exile your own shit to death, no good. but cool with a few cards in here such as exarch. which can be exiled with venser, brought back at the end of their turn, letting you tap down something to swing in with and not be blocked by gideon (but that's a stretch, and you're missing gideon. which seems awful. xD he's too good to pass up, and has too much synergy with venser.) Also. glimmerpoint is with venser only imo, no need for sundial. it seems like sundial and venser aren't meant to worth together with any other 3 card combos, which is nice.

sundial + x. ==> Cool for protecting a lot of your cards, like colonnade, and cool against their tricks like giant growth or something on a blocker maybe? or something like that. also, well, obviously godteir with mimic vat.

venser + x ==> cool to rest counters on... on wait. :( fun with glimmerpoint stag though. :D and to bounce a sun titan then be able to day then bring back your spellskite or something maybe? cool with o-ring too, to bring it back, or to exile something else. :)

Idk. I feel like the deck is trying to do a few too many different things at once and spreads itself a bit too thin. I on the other hand focused too much on attacking lockdown with a variety of cards which all work very well together and provide lots of consistency, but in doing so, opened myself up to a few cards that will wreck me.
If i were to make suggestions, I'd say to either run gideon, drop the spellskites, and play either mangnets or into the roil, possibly stonehorn. which i obviously really dig. xD lol.
Also no manlands seems odd. I just don't see many win-cons here besides after a very very long time, exiling everything they have and then swinging with sun titan...
Also maybe it might not be a bad idea to throw out or less of mana leak? I find that in my stonehorn lockdown deck, mana leak shows up too inconsistently for me to make the most of it. I ran up to 4 just recently, aka, today, to see if that helped and it did a little, but as this isn't a counter-magic control like UB or UW or UU (haha) normally is, leak is just too little counter magic to rely on it, it'd be better imo to just have something awesome and hold onto in your hand bluffing it as a counter. XD

also - i guess i didn't notice this before, but being able to end your turn is awesome alone in a control deck. honestly. they go to cast something EOT or whatever, and you're just like no. but abolisher would be more useful than sundial for that, or honestly, you could just run didmember. xD or baneslayer or something... idk...

All in all though, I like the deck, I just think it's spreading itself too thin. I'd focus it down to one form of control with a minor splash of another, and add a few more reliable win cons and even out the curve of your control. where as mine starts at 3, and is very slow (though we've had to get used t3 4/4 LL Vig lately... control hasn't always been like that, btw...)

So basically.
1. Focus things down. :)
2. Ways to protect your focus while hurting them at the same time. (sometimes best D is a good O, remember that [aka, sometimes dismember is better D than leak]) :D
3. add more win cons. xD

also, when talking about speed up there, remember for some of your combos to work you'll have to pay for sundial every turn.... :( making it even worse. xD

I mean, the interactions are very cool, don't get me wrong, just the deck doesn't seem to have a /real/ wincon, and seems way too slow, and without the control to support the speed. other than that, i like it. :)

0

I agree it does go a little slow. And it might be trying to do to much. I think after this Friday I will get a better idea of what I need to cut back on. I was thinking of taking out mimic vat all together and going with Stonehorn Dignitary. Then was thinking of -1 sun titan and -1 spellskite for +2 frost titan.

Thanks for the advice slothosaurus. Let me know what you think of my changes i might make. But i wont make them until next week.

603.7b A delayed triggered ability will trigger only once - the next time its trigger event occurs - unless it has a stated duration, such as "this turn.

The exile part of the ability is a delayed triggered ability. It goes on the stack during the end step, and is then exiled by Sundial of the Infinite. Delayed triggered abilities trigger once and only once, so it will never trigger again.

This might clear it up or read this thread so that way you can understand it better.

Add 4 Tectonic Edge vs the Valakut matchup, since exiling their Titans wont protect you from their 20 other ways to dig mountains out of their decks, also you might as well put in 4 Celestial Colonnade for alternate win condition?

0

I agree it would be good to add in tectonic edge. Where I play at though i only play one valakut maybe two. So not to concerned with it and the fact that it rotates in what like a month and a half. And i think that this deck has way to much going on to add in celestial colonnade. But thanks for the ideas.

Sundial of the Infinite is a little confusing but very AWESOME.

So the way I understand it, it will also work with Mystifying Maze.

May be worth adding in 2 or more if that is the case.

Great deck!

0

No Mystifying Maze ability reads.

Exile target attacking creature an opponent controls. At the beginning of the next end step, return it to the battlefield tapped under its owner's control.

With that said you can only activate sundial during your turn. So no Mystifying maze would not work considering its during there attack faze that you would activate mystifying maze.

I think (I may be wrong) the end step is skipped with Sundial, and the turn skips all remaining steps and goes to the next upkeep.

WOW! I had some serious doubts until i looked it up and realized that the next end step is the one that occurs next, not the one after the one in this turn. This is the most briliant deck idea that I hope (but realy would rather not face) to see at FNM.

The only thing is that Leyline is better than grand abolisher when stopping direct damage because it stops it from ever happening. If i remember correctly it also stops them from burning vensor becaus you have to target the player controling the planeswalker to burn a planeswalker.

Yeah I like the mimic vat honestly. And control is one of the reasons I decided to main gideon. his first 2 abilities add in a good amount of control and the last one makes for a nice win condition. As for elspeth, I've used her in a few different decks before and she always comes through for me. Whether I needful chump blockers. Also you can o ring your cards then field wipe leaving your opponent wide open for your heavy hitters.

9/22/2011 If Sundial of the Infinite's ability is activated before the end step, any "at the beginning of the end step"-triggered abilities won't get the chance to trigger that turn because the end step is skipped. Those abilities will trigger at the beginning of the end step of the next turn. The same is true of abilities that trigger at the beginning of other phases or steps (except upkeep).

all effect : At the next end step will trigger on opponent step !

Ran across this and though it was nice to see one not based around Mimic Vat.. I was looking to run the idea in vintage (area isn't super competitive) And dropped 1x Plains, and the 3x Ponder, 4x Glacial Fortress, and 3x Seachrome Coast and picked up 4x Tundra, 4x Nimbus Maze, & 3x Impulse. The deck has been running rather well.. I noticed that the mana curve in the original deck was good but my luck was having me draw the coasts later in the game and they were generally a wasted land drop. they were the first to go. I tried the Depths Painland first and it was ok. but switched it out for tundras once i grabbed my 4th. after that Nimbus Maze was a no brainer as it allows me to with a tundra in play get either color. The Impulse was simply put in to replace ponder. sure it isnt as good but does basically the same thing except I can see the 4th card and it protects me from life loss due to drawing cards.
