Deck Description

I decided to go Grixis since i've never done it before and it's not a current meta game right now. I'm not a blue player by any means, so this is a challenge for me. I'm a big midrange player though and I decided to stick with that tactic. A variety of removal clears the way for Aetherling and Master of Waves for the win condition.

How to Play

A general midrange deck. Heavy removal to lead into Master of Waves (MOW) and Aetherling. Frostburn Weird and Omenspeaker are early defense along with Nightveil Specter. Specter is mainly used for the MOW devotion and it's ability is pretty useful, should you be playing against a deck that runs R/U/B.

The deck could use a bit of work overall. I'd be welcome to any suggestions.

Deck discussion for Grixis Standard

Here goes... my general thoughts are that I love Grixis and always will. Your creature set up is pretty solid and looks like a great place to start. You have some early defense, scry and devotion capability to power MOW. You definitely need more land count to support your curve. Right now is a tough time for Grixis because it doesn't have access to more scry lands (which is wants badly in my opinion). As far as the spell assortment and board, I would recommend a more varied approach that tailors to the metagame and the midrange style of the deck. If I were going to play Grixis tomorrow, it might look something like this:

//Artifact (1)
1 Rakdos Keyrune

//Creature (17)
2 Ætherling
4 Frostburn Weird
4 Master of Waves
4 Nightveil Specter
2 Omenspeaker
1 Thassa, God of the Sea

//Enchantment (2)
1 Claustrophobia
1 Whip of Erebos

//Instant (13)
2 Cyclonic Rift
1 Far//Away
2 Hero's Downfall
2 Doom Blade
1 Ultimate Price
1 Swan Song
1 Turn // Burn
2 Syncopate

//Planeswalker (2)
2 Jace, Architect of Thought

//Sorcery (3)
2 Divination
1 Dreadbore

//Land (23)
4 Blood Crypt
3 Island
1 Mountain
1 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
4 Steam Vents
3 Swamp
4 Temple of Deceit
3 Watery Grave

SB: 2 Underworld Cerberus
SB: 3 Anger of the Gods
SB: 2 Rakdos's Return
SB: 2 Sire of Insanity
SB: 2 Slaughter Games
SB: 2 Thoughtseize
SB: 1 Swan Song
SB: 1 Rakdos Keyrune

I'm not 100% on the board as I'd have to think about it more but the main deck seems like it would be a solid adjustment. Few key points of note:

- The increased land count is necessary. Increases consistency and prevents mana screw. The draw and scry you have should get you were you need to be with 23 land but there's no substitute for play testing.
- I split up your spells more to give you variety. Each spell has diminishing returns so having a solid array gives you options to draw into when you need them. With this assortment, you shouldn't have issues with planeswalkers, obzedat or other large threats. Turn//Burn is a solid option to even take out blood baron of vizkopa.
- Claustrophobia increases devotion while keeping removal high.
- Added a 2nd Jace because he's THAT good right now
- Added a keyrune to increase your red count as well as resilience to Supreme Verdict which right now, hurts your deck a bit. Added 1 to the board in case you needed more threats that worked better against them.
- Keeping Sire of Insanity as he's great right now. Dodges both ultimate price AND doom blade while stripping hands.
- And finally, 1 Whip of Erebos main as Grixis always wants some form of life gain if possible to stabilize against all these other decks that seem to have access to life gain

Let me know what you think. Still a work in progress but hope this helps or at least gives food for thought.

I have made changes to the deck with a lot of your recommendations being used. Let's Start:

Artifact: Added the Keyrune

Creatures: Just couldn't get Thassa in there. Yeah she's a god and indestructible and whatnot, but I'd honestly would rather use the bident. Call me crazy...

Enchantment: I went 2 Claustrophobia because of the devotion/removal. It was just that good. Any monstrosity or unblockables just can't work around it. It stops so many things....

Instants: Ok here's where my brain exploded. I couldn't have so many onesies, just not enough of the same potency. The big changes are the following:
2x Doom Blade
2x Magma Jet (Gotta love that Scry + Damage)
2x Far // Away (Too good to pass up on, in essence, could work better than dreadbore on creatures)
2x Syncopate (I see your point)

Lands: Matched to your recommendation

SB: I ditched swan song completely, both in SB and deck. Added 2x Anger of the Gods for additional W/G Hate. And yeah, you just can't steer me away from Turn // Burn. It just turns so much awesome creatures into moot.

Whatcha think?

Sounds decent. If that's what your gut says, go with it. There's no substitute for play testing and seeing how it performs against what's out there and your meta game.

Just keep an open mind and try new things. Often times when I try new things, I just add a 1 or 2 of into the deck and see how it performs for me. If it goes well, I add a copy, if not, I give it a shot or two and subtract a copy maybe. This way, I can get a sense for how often I want to draw it and in what situations.

That's all for now. Maybe we'll play test it sometime soon so we can give it a few rounds.
