Deck Description

This is a work in progress deck for modern, on another decklist of mine it was mentioned that Grim Flayer has gone out of favour and I got to thinking about how to have some fun playing this guy again.

This deck aims to trigger delirium through bolts, baubles, fetches and discard. It's not perfect but might be fun to play!! Any suggestions to improve the deck are all welcome.

Btw, sideboard is a playground of ideas and suggestions for the work in progress deck.

Deck discussion for Queen Vic

Jund builds with tarmogoyf have had seal of fire replace lightning bolt in the past, and if bloodbraid elf cascades it you get to "store" it.

Abrupt decay was usually chosen as an instant, and with so many lurrus brews it will have its uses.
It's also a forgotten gem.

Maelstrom pulse can be really devastating sometimes.

I can post my 2018 flayer junk test deck so you can see what a build looks like when it's built around grim flayer.

Sure, let's have a look. I havnt played JUNK since about 2013/14 so I'd be happy to another build again. I remember main boarding Plague Boiler to try slow opponents down from over committing, Bob for draw, lingering Souls, Thrun the last Trollp, Locodon Smiter and Treetop Village. They all seem way to slow now though, I stopped playing for a few years around when Flayer came out and when Wrenn and Six came out I started plaibg again with and updated my JUND deck.

Always happy to see any deck builds that use my favourite colour combinations - JUND, JUNK, GRIXIS

It's a few weeks ago that saffronolive from mtggoldfish tested out an older jund brew from 2015 based on siege rhino, he got decent results if you consider the fact that he rarely tests out the decks beforehand. He did it against the modern meta and what surprised him the most was how efficient manlands were, but if you compare the shift players made to field of ruin compared with ghost quarters, the manland hatred is actually pretty low these days.

I'll put up the list later today.

Here's the 2015 list that saffronolive used

I've posted the first flayer deck I could find in my test deck collection.
I might have a jund version too, but it will take me some time to remove all the soda cans in front of my "archive"
I drink far too many energy drinks, and it takes some time for me to bring the damn cans to the market, so they take up a lot of space in the cellar.

One vital detail you should know, if you suspect running into blood moon the deck was really vulnerable against it, but we are talking about a meta where simian spirit guide was legal.

This brew was contemporary with a time where kci was present, stoneblade was present and cheerios were present, so it should be able to deal with hammertime.

It was an insanely versatile meta back then, and it actually managed to break my pro friend, which might be another reason why I still use it. Few things can break a champion, but the sheer diversity of all 64 decks made him incapable of breaking through it.

If there's anything in the build that you are curious about I will probably be able to fill in some details about the meta.

I have had a peek through the deck in the link and the link in that as well. I do like JUNK decks and they were my first real serious modern deck so I am always happy to see then around.

KCI was also one of my favourite decks to play and I still have it sitting there waiting / hoping for the unbannings to happen.... might be a while!!

Agree with Bloodmoon, I have noticed it pops up quite alot now in online content I see. JUND & JUNK suffer unless they run more nasics or fetch key basics early. I've always loved tapping for G B on the Bloodmoon cast trigger to then Abrupt Decay it when it hit's the field. I am pretty impressed with Dragons Rage Channeler in ... well every single deck I see it in. So, I think it should be great friends with Grim Flayer, just need to build a deck that is not just a JUND treibute deck but one that can stand it own ground in today's meta.

As a side note, I do have 2 main deck building strategies. 1, fun budget multiplayer decks 2, competitive modern decks that aren't meta copies (or at least decks that put up a good fight).
So this in me attempting to build a JUND delerium package! Thanks to your random mention of Grim Flayer on another deck of mine. TBH, I kinda forgot that card existed!!! Oops

Keen to see if it's possible/any good!

I think that if the white parts are removed it could become jund.
Exchange siege rhino with bloodbraid, but keep it at 2 to keep the mana as intact as possible.

Lingering souls could become something else, something flashbacky like darkblast or Firebolt perhaps or some other graveyard based stuff. It would be best as something red. Maybe some red escape spell or kroxa if you can figure out the mana.

Among the 2018 decks there is an eldrazi bloodbraid jund design which might have some stuff to scavenge as well.

You wouldn't believe how many cool cards that are forgotten because of band wagon players.

I've been trying to tell people for years how field of ruin is to slow, and I'm thinking of collecting ghost quarters for the day that changes. Ironically I invested infield of ruin myself, and I really should go sell them to buy up the ghost quarters. Every time I see a mill deck and see it got 2nd place but lost to tron, I feel like yelling "morons" tron takes 3 turns to assemble, field of ruin takes 3 mana to use, so if tron starts, field of ruin is losing the race. 50/50 failure rate.

Ghostquarter stops tron your turn 1 if they start the game.

But I'm rambling...

Let me know when you've built it.

love me some ghostquater!!! Kroxa you say... hmm I think it's in my JUND deck now (added it the second it came out and still havnt played it!!)

I'll keep adding to main as I play test it against my tron, OG jund, KCI (for funzies), Heliod Company, izzet Murktied and others... should give me some data to play with on weather or not it's viable.

Don't forget that kamigawa, neon dynasty is just around the corner.

I'm actually a little hooked on the storyline, because we might get to know who vorinclex gave the nectar of the kaldheim gods.

Two mechanics I really love are back.

Channel and phyrexian mana.

Channel was one of the "cannot be countered" mechanics that I really thought were underrepresented, but now it's around again. I'm especially looking forward to boseiju's channel.

Havnt had much time to playtest bur... I did have some games against JUND and lightning bolt didn't seem that useful when I needed to push through. I cut them to increase Unholy Heat to 3x in main now and that helped to clear Goyfs and Lily's when it counted. Felt strong going first and dropping DRC T1 followed by discard and or removal T2. Grim doesn't hit as hard as Goyf for obvious reasons but if it sticks around ot works great with all the delerium and added a great body to the board. Problem was Fatal Push almost evertime on time from JUND!!! The of course into lilly then edict me!! I'll keep testing when I find time and make changes (add suggestions) as we go

The build sort of starts with dragons rage channeler.
It attracts discard because discard let's you protect it from removal, so it can both manipulate your top with surveil and bring big beats.

Mishra's bauble enables you to abuse the channeler the turn it's there, influencing the quality of your second draw and adding content to your graveyard.

Fetchlands enable you to play blood Crypt and overgrown tomb for your turn 1 and turn two so you can play two discard spells on your turn 2, and through surveil you increase the odds of that move.

I'd say that covers the turn one.

But against other jund, your gameplan is spoiled by their turn 1 lightning bolt.
So you need to adapt towards that move.

I can think of three cards that both allow you to bounce back fast from an assault on dragon rage channeler.

There's uneart and noxious revival.

Unearth can be used on drc, grim flayer and tarmogoyf and a whole array of other competitive creatures, ooze & death's shadow) noxious revival can be used to bring back creatures, baubles, spells or even fetchlands.

Grim flayer, tarmogoyf and wrenn can use the graveyard, and I think ravens crime might be good with wrenn and six.

Using both relic of progenitus and mishra's bauble could be good against the discard of other jund and could be used to take on a more aggressive approach with liliana.

I'm not convinced seasoned Pyromancer will be good.
I'm thinking the ignoble hierarch might be able to allow you to run bloodbraid faster, maybe even thought-knot seer if you can find the room for ghostquarter, which will also be sweet with wrenn and six.
