Deck Description

I have always wanted to play control and I eventually decided that I liked the Esper colours. I have tried to build my own version of the Esper Control strategy, although a number of cards seem to be universally required.

How to Play

The idea is to try and keep my opponent off balance by heavily disrupting their plays until I can stabilize. Then using Elspeth or Aetherling to finish them off when I think the coast is clear.

Deck discussion for Esper Control (Mark II)

personally...
with the supreme verdict and others in main board for board wipes i would switch ashiok for elspeth. more versatility- unless you want the tokens. i also prefer exile cards. daxos, mindreaver, psychic intrusion...and such are standard
if your thinking of staying standard play...keep in mind ravnica block is going by the wayside Sept, otherwise its a lot of cash for this deck that won't be in full rotation soon and more cash to replace them

check this if you can - far from standard play though

Thank you very much for your input. I put Ashiok in the sideboard rather than the Main Deck because I wasn't sure how it would perform. I am a big fan of it's abilities though. I haven't got my hands on Daxos or Mindreaver yet, but Psychic Intrusion certainly interests me. I'm thinking of moving to a U/B Control deck after rotation. It is a lot of cash but thankfully I already own these cards except for Hero's Downfall. I'm not looking forward to trying to keep the deck alive post rotation. Lol

I'm not a big fan of it either. I like that thoughtseize got reprinted but not much of the block itself really jumps out at me.

Underworld Connections and Read the Bones isn't needed at all when you have 4 Sphinx's Revelation and Jace, Architect of Thought. The deck has enough draw as it is and you need more support cards. Duress works better in the sideboard to come in against control and you NEED 4 Supreme Verdict to keep aggro under your belt. I agree with 26 land but you shouldn't need mana confluence unless you don't have all the required lands. If that is the case disregard that comment. I put AEtherling in my sideboard in my Esper deck and I ran Blood Baron of Vizpoka and Obzedat, Ghost Council in the main deck but if you don't have or don't want them in the maindeck then you only need 1 AEtherling, really. I'd move Hero's Downfall up to 3 and drop Far // Away to 1. Doom Blade is at least needed in the sideboard because outside of Far // Away your deck CANNOT touch Stormbreath Dragon and opposing Blood Baron's without wiping the board completely or dropping Elspeth with her middle ability. Also through in Blind Obedience to buy yourself some time. Don't forget about M15, it brought some new toys to standard that control can utilize, like AEtherspouts.

Thank you for your input. I'm on the fence about Underworld Connections, but I put in Read The Bones because of the Scrying. I have been considering replacing the two copies of Underworld Connections with another two Hero's Downfall. I've also been wondering if it's a good idea to move the two Duress to the Sideboard and put the two Thoughtseize in the Main Deck. I'm not too worried about Aggro at my local Meta (since only about three people at my LGS really play Aggro). I was thinking of swapping the two Mana Confluence for two Temple of Silence since this deck can really hurt itself with life loss already. Any thoughts?

Control decks like at least 10+ scry lands. It pretty much negates the need for Read the Bones especially when you already have Jace, Architect of Thought. I'd run 4 Supreme Verdict anyways and if you're local meta doesn't have a lot of aggro just sideboard them out if needed.

would two copies of Doom Blade work in place of Read The Bones?

You could do that. I've seen some esper decks main deck Doom Blade.
