Deck Description

this is a fairly preliminary attempt at a mill deck that actually works (and quickly).

i've spent a few hours playing a stripped down version of this deck (with no counter magic) just to sort through the most successful mill cards, and i settled on the main five of:
- mesmeric orb
- dreamborn muse
- howling mine
- mind funeral
- wheel and deal

mind funeral is more of a finisher than anything, but can be twinned, relearned or played in multiples near the beginning of the game for a very tasty denial spell, dumping a considerable part of their library out of their reach.

forbidden crypt enables the win condition (letting you effectively demonic tutor every time you draw a card, to re-cast all your mill spells) and it also prevents you from decking yourself. very handy! but quite often you won't need to play it.

the sideboard is a list of potential cards that i think could potentially work in the deck but haven't had a chance to test. i own all of the cards in the deck, but none of the ones in the sideboard (except portcullis)

without counters, and playing fairly aggressively and recklessly, it would lose to faster decks but with a more mid-range deck it won 50% of the time.

my aim is to adopt a more reactive approach.... play the auto-mill cards (dreamborn muse, mesmeric orb etc.) and sit back, play counters and bounce their lands. maybe boomerang their land on turn two, deny them a turn early in the game, drop a cost-reducer and have 1-cost counters for the rest of the game. and of course, when you're close to decking either yourself or your opponent, either play a twinned mind funeral to finish your opponent, or throw down a forbidden crypt to get a considerable advantage and throw mill spell after mill spell to destroy them in one or two turns.

memory lapse in this deck is pretty much a hard-counter.

it seems to work! i'm genuinely surprised.... mill has become a viable deck type!

Deck discussion for working mill (it works!)

you need more lands. I think that that blue enchantment that makes your opponent mill 2 everytime they play a spell would be a nice addition. Forced fruition would be good too. Nemesis of reason might be a good creature as well. Glimpse is a great turn 2 as well.

you're letting your opponent get a lot of chances since you let him draw a lot of cards. you could look at my deck for inspiration if you want.
If you do plz comment ^_^

l3dzppln: that enchantment is called memory erosion, and it's a bit too slow for this deck. there's always something better to play when it's in your hand, so it ends up never getting played. i own two copies but it's just not that good for this deck.

with regards to land, the current (physical in real life) build of the deck has 17 or 18 lands. and it works just fine. never had even the slightest problem with land.

where it does fall down slightly is the sort of turn 4 lull, where you've expended a couple of counters and you want to lay down a dreamborn muse.... this leaves you potentially open to a burn spell or a couple of creatures on your opponent's turn..... but boomerangs (for your opponent's lands) and cost-reducers (the familiar) get rid of this problem.

ALJ: i was pretty worried about this to begin with, but after actually playing the deck, it hasn't caused a problem yet... in fact it gets rid of more lands from their deck, making the mind funeral more effective.

thanks for both your comments =)

also, remember that if me and my opponent are drawing extra cards, he's getting milled for more, and also i'm getting more counterspells. and when all of my counters cost 2 or maybe even 1 with a familiar in play, i've got the advantage if we're both drawing the same number of cards.

playing against a control deck may get interesting, but he/she probably wouldn't have an answer to the constant milling, whereas i have an 'anti-decking' card to protect me, in the forbidden crypt.

I understand this is a mill deck, but you can add Underworld Dreams seeing how this is the draw sort of milling deck. Pls check out my Mill or Discard/Draw Burn decks.

Underworld Dreams seems like a good idea. i'll check it out, maybe see if i can track down a playset of them.

currently don't own the card, but i might be able to find it somewhere.

Hey Purkle, thanks for the info you left on my deck. I'm just starting to get back into the game from when I was a kid, and decided to try and whip a deck together. I'm not terribly great at the game but decided to build one on here in hopes of advice, and you gave me some good stuff. I don't really have anything to add to the comments given by the others, but was wondering if you could do me a favor and check out my deck again. I made quite a bit of changes but now feel like there are too many different cards, and it would all come down to luck of the draw for me. Any thoughts?

thanks for the pointers on my mill deck. Lich Lord was actually there to make creature support, and maybe using is secondary effect as a plus. but other than that the deck runs great and quick,. I;m keeping the traumatizes in there because I have a thing for them, but i took the lich lords out and but a demonic tutor and haunting echoes in. take a look at my other decks and see what you think, especially my dragon and purple rain

traumatize would be a good addition here, it may also be a good idea to use sins of the past in replacement of relearn.

Your deck seems short on land, so i've no idea how you hit your mana curve, but if you say it works.
