Deck discussion for UBg Tempo

I have been waiting to see a glimmer of this kind of shenanigans, hell I've been trying to get it to work myself, but this is just an amusingly evil base for it.

Thanks guys! This is still kind-of a work in progress. Any criticisms? I'm unsure about the win-con, but stifle is going in anyway...

Well, StifleNought is a pretty big deal. The way the deck is laid out, I think the Dreadnought is the best possible win condition for it.

My critique is that I'd rather see two Surgical Extraction's and an Extirpate than the Probe here, but that's a heavily meta-biased thought. Other than that, no SDT? Really? Not even a one-of?

I think Probe can be very powerful because of the information it gives you about your opponent... a tempo deck that knows exactly which spells it needs to counter is insane. I'll admit that I and looking into fitting extraction into this deck however.

SDT.... Again, the issue is room. I need to fit the tempo disruption, the Confidants, and the win-con and that doesn't leave a lot of room.

counterintelligence? you might need to help me with this one. see, i am almost exclusively an aggro player, almost exclusively green, and occasionally stompy. i don't make much of a point to know deck types, i just break shit and it dies. :D

I'm sorry to post this but i've tried to build a tempo deck and focused it mostly around Card advantage. What exactly should a tempo deck be looking to do? or achieve?

0

A Tempo deck is designed to quite literally throw the opponent off their game plan and force the match into a "tempo". By jumping the gun, the opponent will always have to play defensively, and never how they want to play. Often enough too, the opponent will make a lot of dumb mistakes because they're so flustered.

The best way I've heard someone describe them is like this: Imagine in a baseball game the pitcher is already in his wind-up and you're just walking over to the plate.

This is why Fae is so dominant in Extended. Many Faeries have excellent abilities for Tempo. All of my decks that have latin names are Tempo decks, so looking at those might give you a better idea.

It's pretty much the logical step forward from the usual StifleNought tempo, I like it a lot. I do however think you should try and find someway to slip a third Hymn into the deck, it wins so many games it's insane.

Thanks guys. You rock, thanks for the support... Even if you rarely have suggestions :P I'm thinking about a third Hymn, but the BB is annoying...

You know, with the meta like it is, it's not a bad thought for even tempo decks to house two Null Rods. Fish on the rise means Æther Vial, Painted Stone means, well Painted Stone, and Affinity has a lot of people playing it right now.

Also it takes those obnoxious LED's from the equation against storm.

Did you consider torpor orb?

0
Posted 28 May 2011 at 12:39

I used to have the Orb, but I dropped it for more disruption. I'm thinking of ditching Dreadnaught for something else... Maybe Tombstalker?

0
Posted 28 May 2011 at 16:41

So how you liking that third Hymn? I'm not much an actual tempo player, but I do know that heavy disruption helps almost any MU other than Dredge, and it doesn't get any heavier than Hymn to Tourach.

I do like the sideboard, but I still advocate Null Rod. Personal suggestion is nix two needles for two rods, yes it ups the mana, but it ups the control. I can see the benefits of running needles over it in tempo, but I still think the raw advantage overrules it.

You do realise that the oracle text has been changed so the stiflenaut combo no longer works right?

0
Posted 30 May 2011 at 09:50

The fact I posted this deck would implu that, no, I did not know that, obviously since there is then no way to actually use Dreadnaught. However, I have looked over the oracle text in question and see no reason why it does not work. Would you care to explain?

0
Posted 30 May 2011 at 16:43

Judgeman says; Stiflenought still works. There's no valid reason it doesn't, because Stifle can still counter a triggered ability, and the sacrifice clause on Dreadnought happens to be a triggered ability.

Backed by the oracle text provided by both cards on the official WotC gatherer, and by a second opinion judge.

A temp deck like this should run Sinkhole.

0
Posted 31 May 2011 at 17:13

If only sinkhole was a good card... The truth is that sinkhole is no longer very relevant in the format, as it is kinda slow. I also want to keep BB mana costs to a minimum

If I understand this correctly, this deck controls the pace of the game long enough to finish the opponent off with Tombstalker?

Jace helps manipulate your library, bounce their creatures and fateseal the game. Also a win con but not in this deck

Jace costs 4, a strike against him here. I also feel there is simply no room for him... What would you possibly take out?

I would take out 1 tombstalker for 1 jace anyway. If you wanted to run two take out daze(?)

This really reminds me of my BUG deck, though this is clearly better with the Force of Wills and actual duals. However, I think that BUG is probably the better way to go if you're going to play Dark Confidant and throw in Tarmogoyf instead of Tombstalker. I just think that Tombstalker is a suicide card when paired with Dark Confidant as it will likely lead to you losing nearly half your health if you flip it up.:/ Besides that little issue, it looks like a solid list! Oh, and why Stifle? It seems like it may be better as something like Duress/Thoughtsieze or even the 1 blue to counter a 2-drop card (can't remember the name right now). I'm just not so sure I'd rather be Stifling right now unless you're casting your own Hunted creature or a Dreadnaught. Again, great deck overall. I love this style.:)

0

BUG tempo was actually the inspiration for this deck in a way. The thing about BUG is that you are forced to run 8+ duels, making your mana base rather exposed to attack. BUG also makes running FoW and BB cards simultaneously noticably harder. Stifle is an amazing card in so many circumstances really

0
Posted 05 June 2011 at 18:05

Sure, that makes sense. I run a BUG list though (very budget for Legacy) and get by just fine with fetchlands and only 2 Green dual lands (Ravnica version) for just 4 Quirion Dryad. I feel like Something similar here would be nice for 4 'Goyfs if you're not too worried about budget. It doesn't hurt the land base too much and is just much nicer for beating down and working with Dark Confidant (two life is much easier to handle than 8!). Everything else seems pretty solid, though.
As for Stifle, I guess I just don't have enough Legacy experience yet to really understand how good it is/can be. If it works for you then great. I'm just not so sure it would be much good in my playgroup really... Stifling some sac-land (fetch or wasteland) seems really good though!:)

0
Posted 06 June 2011 at 02:42

Stifle a fetch or a wasteland is obviously great, but you can also hit Lavamancer, KotR (sac effect), Maze of Ith, Pithing Needle, planeswalkers, SDT, Dredge, and much much more!

I'm going to try out the green splash... What do you think of this? Nice and simple

0
Posted 07 June 2011 at 12:07

Simply put... I would NOT want to run into this. haha. I honestly think this version looks sick with just that minor tweak. Goyf just seems so much better in the deck to me. If you don't like it, w/e but I just have a hard time seeing too many decks where Goyf isn't pretty much just stellar. Haha. And wow... Ok, you won me over on the Stifle play. Haha. Just thought of another, too! LED! Haha. "Sac. this, discard my hand, adding mana to kill you..." - "umm.. Stifle." "Damn! gg..."

Is there some reason you would want to lose life in this deck? I ask because if not, misty rainforest is pointless. There is not a single situation where you would draw misty rainforest and you would not draw an island had you replaced them with islands, so really it's just "pay 1 life, play an island," as opposed to "play an island."

0
Posted 07 June 2011 at 00:06

That's not really true. Misty grabs Underground Sea first of all. It also has synergy with Brainstorm.

0
Posted 07 June 2011 at 03:34

The synergy I mentioned with Brainstorm works like this: Lets say I untap on turn 3 with 2 lands on the table, and another 3 in my hand, including a fetchland. I can brainstorm, put lands back, drop and crack the fetchland, and then I shuffle my extra lands away. Lands are a great example of this because this deck is set if it hits its 3rd or 4th land drop, but it also works with other things I don't want for whatever reason

Honest question and not meant as a critique - Why Ponder over Preordain? I honestly have no idea which is really better in a deck like this. I run Preordain, though a large part of that is probably just because they're more readily available for me...

0
Posted 08 June 2011 at 16:17

Ponder looks at 3 cards, Preordained only 2. Pretty simple. In general, such cards are ranked by:
1) # drawn
2) # seen
3) other effects (scry, shuffle, ect)

Thus brainstorm>Ponder>Preordain

Hmmm, dangerous. Liking the UBg approach you've adopted, it's a light splash, and a very powerful one at that.

I also note you're running Null Rods in the board, how're you enjoying them?

I don't know. I havent really faced many decks I would bring them in against, but I havent needed the sb space for anything else yet. *shurgs*

0

Maybe it's just me, but I keep seeing Thoptertop, and there it's just laughter if they can't get rid of it. Then Affinity, Painter's Stone, and in the case of my Reanimator it deals with hate.

I usually find myself in an overabundance of SB slots, so I like to toss two in there for those. Also, it deals with a resolved AEther Vial in the very off game, had bad judgement days and done that to somebody.

Can someone explain what a tempo deck is? XD

0
Posted 10 June 2011 at 03:22

A tempo deck is a deck based around disrupting your opponents play - messing up their tempo. UB is a powerful base for tempo because, as you see in this deck, you get both plenty of free counter spells as well as discard. Dark Confidant is there for card advantage, and Brainstorm/Ponder is to smooth out your draws. the 5 removal spells kill creatures that get through, and Tarmogoyf is there as a win con. Hope this helps!

0
Posted 10 June 2011 at 11:59

I think another important factor of tempo is not just simply disrupting the opponent but also being able to apply steady pressure at the same time, so creating and applying your own tempo at the same time. Your deck does so quite well with cheap efficient beaters that can hit quite hard. I mean, you wouldn't really call a mono black, creatureless discard deck (maybe winning with Megrim or something) tempo would you? I know I wouldn't. Or a straight UB control deck either...:/
