With a good amount of sacrifice effects and counterspells, you are meant to gain solid ground and steady control of the game quickly. By 4 or 5 land you are able to cast the bulk of the deck and do some serious damage. If anyone has been gaining insane life, you exchange life totals with them (yours likely being depleted from opponent and self damaging spells) and drain them with any one of a number of options, not excluding physical. You can manage the powerful hate you incur late game with the reliable card draw from Erebos, necropotence, cycle lands, and river kelpie! which hopefully nab you plenty of counterspells for just the occasion.
