It "Bogle"s the Mind.

by Jessie on 18 October 2014

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (9 cards)

Creatures (6)

Enchantments (3)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Slippery Bogle + Ancestral Mask + Enchanted Evening = Ouch

A little 1/1 hexproof creature becomes 20/20, or more, by Turn 5.

Enchanted Evening + Primeval Light = Nuke opponent's board.

How to Play

Trying to have Slippery Bogle as a win condition.

Drawing extra cards with Sylvan Library.
Mana ramping Birds of Paradise and Abundant Growth.

Beast Within to remove any pesky threats my opponent has.

Reclaim to get your Bogle back from your graveyard, if worse comes to shove.

17 Enchantments to make sure you get your bang for your buck with Slippery Bogle and Ancestral Mask.

Enchanted Evening to brutalize your opponent with Bogle. We are looking at, easily, a 20/20 Bogle on the 5th turn.

Deck discussion for It "Bogle"s the Mind.

Looking for this:

Turn 1. Forest. Arbor Elf.
Turn 2. Forest. Utopia Sprawl on Forest. Slippery Bogle.
Turn 3. Island. Ancestral Mask on Slippery Bogle.
Turn 4. Forest. Enchanted Evening.

Just your permanents alone, not counting your opponents, you have a 17/17 Bogle.
If your opponent, say, has 5 permanents too...Bogle is a 29/29 Bogle.

Slap an Aqueous Form or Rancor on Bogle, and go to town!!!

without mana ramping:

Turn 1. Forest. Slippery Bogle.
Turn 2. Island. Aqueous Form OR Rancor on Bogle.
Turn 3. Forest. Ancestral Mask on Slippery Bogle. He is now a 3/3 or 5/3.
Turn 4. Island. Beast Within OR Boomerang on opponent.
Turn 5. Forest. Enchanted Evening.

You now have a 19/19 Bogle, not including your opponent's permanents.
If opponent, say, has 5 permanents too, Bogle is now a 31/31.

I think the card is Argovian or Argothian Enchantress. There's also a green enchantment that does the same thing: Play an enchantment, draw a card. This kind of deck is the exact reason why my favorite kill card is Grave Pact. Adding some creatures might help against sacrifice.

With all that said, I'm disappointed. I find this deck rather shallow and pedantic.

I have a friend who has an enchantment EDH deck. I have grown to hate enchanted evening due to him combing it with Aura Shards and Dovescape. He plays an instant spell with cmc of 6, auto counters it, puts 6 1/1 birds out, and blows up 6 of your stuffs. = sad face.

Clearly the biggest threat to this deck is being forced to sacrifice your enchanted Bogle. For this reason splashing white to play Sigarda, Host of Herons should def be considered. You wouldn't need much, maybe 2 hallowed fountains and some fetches in addition to the Utopia Sprawl you already have.

Looks like an awesome deck! Im thinking you'll be fine on mana but two blue may be an issue...you'd have to test it. Suggestions: Yavimaya Enchantress over Rayne. Seal of Primordium would be nice as well, and maybe even an Endless Wurm or two? Also, Enchanted Evening, not sure but I think could go as well, 5 mana...eh, and it's two blue. Don't get me wrong, I get the idea behind how huge the creatures will be with it, but they will be awfully big without it, especially a Yav Enchant with Rancor and an Ancestral Mask. I may even suggest dropping the blue entirely and going mono green and straight beat down. Just a thought.

Jessie, have you seen the general Boggles Modern deck? It also runs Gladecover Scout for a secondary "Boggle" and has Ethereal Armor and Daybreak Coronet, for so much added value. Pretty gross to take on unless you have board wipes or forced sacrifice. Might look into it though. I'll post a link for the primer deck used a lot. All in all fun deck.

You have way too few creatures to cast your Mask on. Please note that Argothian Enchantress has actually shroud, not Hexproof. That reduces your Mask-targets to just 8 and all of them are fragile. Even if you had a higher creature count, this deck is screaming "INVISIBLE STALKER" through a megaphone! To make room I would cut the Aqueous Form which is a good card but isn't really needed here - if you have no Maskes dude, it doesn't do much, and if you have one, you don't really need it anymore.

I'd also swap Utopia Sprawl for Abundant Growth and would up the enchantment count by replacing one of the instants by something else. Is Boomerang really needed in here? Use Seal of Removal instead if you can't live without bounce. Impulse could be Sylvan Library and so on.

Finally, Arbor Elf. It can only untap Forests and Hinterland Harbor isn't one, so this isn't that useful. You'd be better off with good old Birds of Paradise instead - they not only provide the mana you need for sure, they also have flying, something that your deck lacks otherwise. This might come in handy when you are trying to win a damage race. And Magic history is full of stories (especially in multiplayer) where Birdies save the day when they got ignored but later on Rancor'ed, Might of Oak'ed and Berserk'ed. Okay, you don't run the latter two but you have that Mask instead.

Hey Jessie, what do you think of smaller enchantments like Spider Umbra, for Reach and Totem Armor, or Flight for evasion to be able to swing in before you're massive?

I tend to see these sorts of things a lot more in the Bant variant because of Ethereal Armor, but your main Voltron pieces are both grounded, and having a way to get up either as a blocker or attacker yourself could help freeze decks like Delver and other decks looking to take a good portion of the fight to the sky and go right over or past you in a race.

They'd definitely give an added hand to your Ancestral Mask boosts.

And not being in three colors, I'm not entirely sure if you need the Abundant Growth for the color-fixing angle, though the cantrip is nice. Over 50% of your land base hits each color.

---

Unrelated (and unabashedly, since I know you're popular around here), would you please take a look at my Jeskai Delver build for Modern? I just put the list up, and would love to get some feedback on it before I take it out to a local event this weekend.

Abundant Growth cantrips and provides another enchantment for the Mask. I would agree that you don't need it in a 2-colour deck if it wasn't for the Mask.

0
Posted 28 October 2014 at 09:52

I did note that the cantrip is nice, but at the same time, I'm wondering whether the cantrip and placeholder enchantment, as it is since you don't need its effect on the land in this deck, would be worthwhile over other enchantments that could be there in its stead.

Curiosity is an Enchantment for U that lets you draw cards on contact, which, coupled with Rancor or Invisible Stalker, is far more than a one for one. Keen Sense does the same, for G.

Frog Tongue cantrips just like Abundant Growth does, and grants a creature Reach, which is something the deck could use as an effect to stop getting raced by Fliers.

Sisay's Ingenuity cantrips as well, and can be used to change the color of your Bogle to get it actually through for the kill against, say, a Mirran Crusader who can block all day with pro-green.

Stratus Walk cantrips and gives Flying for 1U, with the downside that it can only block other Fliers.

---

Basically, there are other options to be had that give a primary effect that the deck could actually use, whereas the mana fix from Abundant Growth seems wasted without the deck being Bant, where you'd go T1 Shockland or Painland, Abundant Growth. Either way, that gives you T2 access to all three of your colors off one land, so the vast majority of your T2 plays are wide open. You could've easily been sitting on a Yavimaya Coast or Breeding Pool and either a Forest or Island in your hand, with no white in sight. That's where Abundant Growth is so good.

Here, I don't see that, since it's easy to just go T1 Forest, T2 Island or Hinterland Harbor, and suddenly, you're in business just the same, without needing Abundant Growth to help out, especially since the deck's also carrying Birds of Paradise as another possible T1 drop.

I'm not saying Abundant Growth is a bad card, by any stretch, just that this particular deck could use other options more functionally for the same boons that it offers, given its construction.

1
Posted 28 October 2014 at 17:24

The deck had Utopia Sprawl originally and I suggested to replace it with Abundant Growth - because when I make suggestions to decks I always try to keep the deck structire intact. I am not adamant on Abundant Growth and your suggestions are solid. And I know for sure that Jessie loves to see the discussion and your reasoning :)

0

I just really don't like seeing spells that could be considered "dead effects" coming down just because they help a big combo go in, like feeding the Mask, when there are deck-beneficial effects that could fill the role as well. It's totally up to the player to decide how they want to put things together, and I'm sure that there may be hands where you have Forest, Forest, Abundant Growth, Invisible Stalker that it lets you snap-keep, but I'm just not wholly sold on it, myself.

---

Looking through Gatherer to see if I missed anything, Mystic Remora is also a decent way to add card draw and a bit of tempo fuel to the early game, though it doesn't cantrip itself, and it has slight anti-synergy with Mask, because you'll want to stop paying the cumulative upkeep, which means a forced sacrifice.

You'll only really want to pay the cumulative upkeep once or twice, but usually that's enough to get some good draw in from it, or at least stop your opponent from putting their bodies on the field before you can really go off and put Bogles to faces.

0
Posted 28 October 2014 at 17:52

While I love Mystic Remora, I don't think it fits well in here. The cumulative Upkeep isn't the only reason for it, it also requires you to have blue mana ready on turn one, which isn't that likely.

0
Posted 28 October 2014 at 17:57

...there are only 3 less Islands than Forests in the deck. It's a 10-7 split for basics, which is over a 40% chance that, if you even just have one basic land in the opening hand, it's an Island.

Not saying Remora's a perfect fit by any stretch, just another option, but you're definitely going to have hands on good frequency where you can drop a T1 Island.

I made a deck around Invisible Stalker. Focus was on counters, scrys, and draws, with runechanters pike. What I wanted was to get items to give the stalker vigilance. Also had butchers cleaver. Pike and cleaver on the stalker and you have at least a 4/1 with firststrike and life link. The runchanters pike can mike it ridiculous. Someone attacked me and dealt me 200 damage in one turn and the life link from one blocker kept me alive.

1

I used that combo. The wings have an ability called Aura Swap, which allows you to cheat in Eldrazi Conscription from your hand by returning the wings. It really has nothing to do with flying, its all about the swap.

That is standard idea with Captain...I want to do something sorta different...trying to find the cards for it.
Basically...I want to have the Captain in play and cast stuff like Aura Mutation and Seed Spark on my opponent. Sorta neat, right? Nuke one of their artifacts/enchantments, you get 1/1 creatures out of the deal which Captain turns into 3/3 creatures. Win win. Looking for cards that basically let you sack one of their creatures and in return receive (1,2,3,or more) 1/1 creatures on your team. Sorta of the creature version of Aura Mutation.

Making it now.

Other ideas Doomed Traveler, Elspeth, Sun's Champion, Hornet Nest, Lingering Souls, Night Soil or Pharika, God of Affliction (If run black), Raise the Alarm and Precinct Captain. Also buying some time before playing Sigil Captain, you could add Pendelhaven.

I want it very single minded...only cards that nuke my opponent's cards. Bonus if they nuke my opponent's cards AND give me 1/1 creatures for it.

Æther Mutation comes to mind but would need to run blue. Other then the two you listed not sure if there is that many cards with that ability.

Thinking the same thing...spent last hour looking over cards and not finding anything.
Ugh...in theory...the deck would of been:

Step 1. Play Captain.
Step 2. Nuke stuff and get 3/3 creatures each time I nuke.

Here is what I was working on.
May end up being a incomplete deck.
I have a few of those, lying around.
