Civic Saber of Chromanticore

by KJSJ3 on 14 May 2014

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (15 cards)

Creatures (2)

Sorceries (6)

Instants (6)

Artifacts (1)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Chromanticore is a card that I've wanted to mess around with for awhile. This deck utilizes Chromanticore with Civic Saber(and Xenagos) to hopefully inflict massive damage to the opponent while trying to keep your lpt out of their reach.
It is still in testing and any changes that you guys think would be for the better, feel free to share. I am hoping to get this good enough (before I order the rest of the cards that I need) that I can take it to standard tournaments.

Any thoughts or sideboard ideas?

If anyone builds a similar deck they wish to share, post a link and I will put it in the box below.

Deck discussion for Civic Saber of Chromanticore

Damn man! This looks like a tough bastard!
If you want some standard control flavor, maybe sideboard AEtherize?

I'm glad you like it. SB AEtherize. 1 card I'm worried about with this deck is Lifebane Zombie. Any ideas on how to deal with it?

Old school counterspells could do the trick, maybe?
Essence Scatter could handle them...

That is true. Good catch.

I'd say Aegis of the gods, but that double white could be a down side.

1

Aegis of the Gods is 1W, not WW. True Believer was WW.

0

Thanks for the correction, it seems a bit more appetizing for U/W control now...

0

I could see using Aegis of the Gods for lifebane and R/W burn even( yes I know they can just remove the Aegis but that is one less removal to the face). Being that your land base is stretched so thin maybe Eidolon of Blossoms as a draw engine might be good here.

Well, the only problem I see with that is that the only early game enchantment he has is Courser of Kruphix, and his two others are the reason he needs lands OR cast for five mana. Of course the eidolon itself would draw a card, along with however many others there are, but again they're at four mana as well.

Dang man, this deck is a beast! AND it's legal in standard. Nice work.

I'm hoping to get the cards so I can use this before stuff rotates.

1

Ethereal Armor and Eidolon of Countless Battles both seem good here.

Kruphix's Insight is awesome and would be an auto include if you find that the enchantment number rises much more

Obzedats aid might be a fun way to get chromanticore back as well (especially if you include some wayfinders)

I'll keep that in mind.

Have you thought about using rakdos cackler for a 1-drop? Since you can get it to a 4 powered creature by turn two I think that's pretty cool.

I like it, but Judge's Familiar gives me more utility. It'll still be an option. This is going to take a lot of play testing.

2

yeah my friend ran a rakdos artifact deck and whenever he used that combo I was almost always just stuffed.

1

Yeah, but Syncopate would be a better call.

1
Posted 14 May 2014 at 21:28

Agreed, no need for clan defiance. Literally so many other good things would work there. Syncopate if you want a counterspell is likely the best

If this wasn't standard I would suggest knight of new alara. Hmm... Have to think about this one a bit.

It's hard to know without playing it, but this deck just feels a little heavy in the mana fixing and acceleration. Four courser, four Caryatid, three Chromatic Lantern is an insane amount of ramp to get to 5 mana. I say remove some of the fixing for more control-y elements or add in something to dump all that mana into when you have it. Maybe a couple Mistcutter Hydra, Aurelia's Fury, Clan Defiance (more), Nimbus Swimmer, Rakdos's Return, Savageborn Hydra, Sphinx's Revelation, etc.

Fantastic idea for a deck, and finally something that seems actually usable that features Chromanticore as a premier card!

0
Posted 14 May 2014 at 21:44

Perhaps instead of Mistcutter, you could use Savageborn Hydra for the double strike and ability to continue pumping it.

0
Posted 14 May 2014 at 22:56

Yeah, I'm personally a fan of the pro-Blue and haste on the Mistcutter. Both die to doom blade pretty easy, at least Mistcutter stands a better chance of making something happen when you drop it.

Love the combo!

You should add some Sphinx's Revelations, especially if you have the Prophet of Kruphix.

Cyclonic Rift is a massive pain for any deck that relies more or less on creatures. Gains you a lot of time.

This deck is so cool. I've always wanted to play Chromanticore, but have never found a good way to do so. Maybe, just maybe, you could consider throwing in a couple Boros Charms for the indestructible. It'll keep your stuff on the field while your opponents creatures die. I think it's the best charm out of all of them. Also, if you wouldn't mind checking out my RUG deck and offering some suggestions I would really appreciate it! http://www.mtgvault.com/dragonsblade72/decks/a-designer-rug/

I was thinking about this and I only have 1 suggestion, and that is possibly Warleader's Helix. It seems like this deck might be a bit bad against the mono red decks coming out, so that gives good removal and lifegain to survive their early game.

Seems like a really fun deck to troll people with.

Shimmering Grotto might help with some mana fixing, not exactly efficient if you're missing 3 types of mana for the Chromanticore but might well work if you're just missing 1/2, Transguild Promenade also has it's uses.

To be fair you do have a fair whack of mana fixing anyway so might be unnecessary.

My primary method of accessing the vault(my phone) has broken and my pos wifi at home is inconsistent and uncooperative, so I won't be on the vault for long periods of time like I normally am. I am sad I will be unable to be on for a while. I really enjoy chatting with and playing against you guys. Hopefully the problem will be resolved soon (o-ring x3... enters abrupt decay). Until then...

Not bad!..

Too many Abrupt Decay though... ...& the mana base ain't good enough... ...you just have to drop all basic lands & use maximum amount of scry-lands(if you have them)... ...I like the basic idea though.......

Love the theory behind this. I have assembled it and played it a bit. One question, sorry for the newbness of it, why not use scrye lands? Is it because its worth two life to have the lands assessable sooner and not have to wait to untap them?

0

In competitive, having the untapped lands is far more important than the 2 life. At least until you have about 10 life or so.

man but there are alot of powerful cards at CMC 3 or under right now, its a tough call

0

lol, just realized that dreadbore could just be put in as a lower CMC replacement of Hero's downfall (since they do the exact same thing), so I'd just replace that with dreadbore, and then leave Abrupt Decay alone. Still not my favorite card since it can't target high CMC cards, but it does have its uses.
