Deck Description

Deck is built around Chisei, he let's me remove a counter from one of my permanents every upkeep (in fact, if I don't, Chisei is sacrificed). The clue is, it could be any kind of counter.

Main combo is with Tornado. First, Chisei can be used to keep the cumulative upkeep in check. That basically means I can keep the Tornado forever. But I can also remove the ferocity counters so that I don't hav to pay life to use it.

Most other cards either also have counters that are good to remove or otherwise useful, many interlocking synergies from all those one-ofs (that's just my style). See more info in the how -to-play-section below.

As always, card in the sideboard are cards I consider adding.

How to Play

Persist/undying creatures can come back once per turn if I remove the counter.

Chisei is a Legend, so I can only remove a single counter per turn, Power Conduit and Ferropede can do that, too. The latter also works well with the Unstable Mutation and Ordeal.

Mirrodin's Core, Coalition Relic and Powder Keg can help out getting early counters for the first Chisei (I am often times forced to play him as a blocker since modern decks are pretty fast and brutal)

Mystic Remora means serious card advanbtage in multiplayer, especially when played early. With Chisei I can pay the upkeep forever.

Note that Yavimaya Dryad an give the Forest to any player - for example your partner in team games or your opponent (the Dryad has forestwalk).

Seedborn Muse is mainly there to make maximum use of Tornado but also combos nice with other cards like the Pendant (Pendant is there because I have so many 1-ofs).

An early Quicksilver Fountain can (and already has in two games) shut down players permanently. With Chisei you can keep your own Forests clean and therefore the Quicksilver Fountain going forever. It's funny when people complain about being shut down by two crappy rares that nobody ever played with :)

Plaxmanta, Voidmage Prodigy and Shielding Plax are mainly there to save Chisei's ass, Genesis to get any of those back.

Bribery, Invert the Skies and Dark Depths are means to win late games.

Remaining cards like the Baloth may look random and they are in some way but hey, I wanted to play with them and so far they did well.

Generally, try to not be too annoying and don't attack too early. You have some slow but steady sources of damage like the Magnigoth Treefolk. Use Tornado defensively until the point where you can win if you kill some key cards. Basically, if you don't know if you should attack/be offensive, don't.

Deck discussion for Keeping up the Tornado

I've heard my husband reference your skill and direct advice often so I was surprised to find a deck of yours "unloved"... I'm extremely new to MtG so, in addition to my husband's tutorial, I'm trying to decipher/interpret decks online to gain a better understanding of various strategies, etc.

I was going to attempt a red/white deck next but, this has almost motivated to me to give green/blue a whirl!

I also submitted this deck as a comment to a "show some unloveds love" thread...

I rarely get comments on my decks for various reasons. The "unloved" marker, however, is something the author can apply voluntarily - it is not an algorythm that determinse what's unloved.

I think I may have known that. I remember Jessie giving some self-deprecating rant, after first registering with the site, about peddling his deck as "unloved" for sympathy views...maybe? That sounds familiar...

NikkiPhoenixRising, don't you dare run crazy blue. Yet. It's really hard to understand the stack - even experienced players get confused.

That being said ... this deck is amazing.

Alright Puschkin, here comes the Optimizer.

You want to have as many freaking creatures with undying as possible. Trust me.

Alternatively, you could use persist with whisperspine.

Then ... bring all the screwy counter advantage you can fit into your deck. Zameck Guildmage, Doubling Season, Thrummingbird

Undying, of course, but there is a total of 7 creatures with undying in my colours of which only three are worth considering. Which has been narrowed down to Stormbound Geist (see sideboard aka cards I want to add) since Avacyn Restored and Dark Ascension are among the few editions I haven't boosted. Vorapede is the card I'd like to see in here, but I have to trade for it. Adding it to the sideboard.
Same is true for persist, I don't own a Glen Elendra Archmage and don't plan to trade for such an annoying card. Kitchen Finks and Scuzzback Marauder are in main and River Kelpie in the side. The other blue/green persisters are rubbish.

I don't know what "whisperspine" refers to.

Zameck Guildmage, Thrummingbird and Doubling Season are are not helping. You might not have understood what I am trying to do - I want to REMOVE counters, not adding more! Please read what Tornado does - Tornado + Chisei is my main combo.

Zameck does remove counters.

Yes, he removes +1/+1 counters. Which doesn't do anything in this deck. Please read the cards I am combining Chisei with: Tornado, Mystic Remora, Quicksilver Fountain, Dark Depths. Or maybe read the description of the deck ... this is NOT a +1/+1 counters deck and certainly don't want to turn it into one.

Hmm ... he still works with undying.

And I refuse to be so mean to your friends as to make a tweak deck. =P

Alright, got some cards:Dismantle, Gremlin Mine, and Ion Storm

Dismantle: In order to make this work I have to destroy an artifact with counters on them. My deck has exactly zero.

Ion Storm: It can only remove +1/+1 counters and charge counters. But I am working with age counters, ferocity counters, -1/-1 counters and flood counters. Does. Not. Work.

Gremlin Mine: Can also only remove charge counters (and only from non-creature artifacts), so it's useless, too.

For the last time: READ THE FREAKING CARDS AND THE DECK DESCRIPTION before making suggestions :P

Also, I know how to use card databases. I checked all cards that are viable. I could add heavy black and add Vampire Hexmage, aside from that, there is nothing I can add counterwise that would improve the deck - keep in mind that whatever you suggest to remove counters would have to work better than the cards I currently run but haven't maxed out: Clockspinning, Ferropede and Power Conduit. There simply is not such a card unless they printed one since I made that deck. And before I splash another colour, I'd rather add more Clockpinnings.

So, I am pretty much set and satisfied with my combo cards. What I am looking for are general suggestions and out-of-the-box-thinking additions that you won't find via a card database query. I still run some random cards that could be replaced for something more fitting. Let's take the Quicksilver Dragon: It's just there because I like the card and own a foiled one, it's casual aftert all, but I am pretty sure there is another fat flyer out there that would fit in much better. The deck lacks in some areas, doesn't have much lifegain for example even though Tornados can leech a lot of my life, I don't have a single counterspells etc.

Hmm ... I wasn't using card search, just the top of my head ...

Hey! When a permanent leaves the battlefield, it loses all it's counters!

Therefore, these cards may work!

Vesner, the Sojourner
Synod Sanctum
Ghostly Flicker
Flickerwisp

And yes they don't just target creatures. But they're flexible and can save your permanents from destruction.

Now we are talking!

I thought about bounce to reset counters but Tornado costs 5 to cast and 3 to use, so that seemed to be impracticable. But I didn't think about blinking it.

Ghostly Flicker doesn't work on enchantments, though, and I am reluctant to add another colour. Synod Sanctum, however, looks nice!

Thinking about it, phasing would also work. but again, nothing works on enchantments ... nothing with the exception of Teferi's Realm. However, this card is tricky to use. But that's exactly what I like :)

No one will see it coming. They'll think ... wtf is blink and that stupid legendary creature doing on the field. Then age counters start dropping, and they learn the horrible truth.

Damn, phasing leaves counters untouched, that combo doesn't work. I'll have to go with the Sanctum then.

That's is good and bad - phase does not fit here, but with +1/+1 counters...

Traded for some cards.

+1 Vorapede
-1 Yavimaya Dryad
+1 Coalition Relic
-1 Sol Ring (the deck is now Legacy legal)

Looks awesome. Yavimaya Dryad is awesome with all your forestwalk!

Coalition relic is easily as powerful as sol ring ... maybe sol ring would be okay if it cost 2 or 3 mans to play.

Well, the main reason I cut it is that I need the Sol Ring for another deck ;)

Another fun deck with an unorthodox card combo. I see two potential problems with the deck (though I haven't played it, so I'm not sure how big the issues really are).
1 - As soon as you're able to destroy permanents at will (basically), you would become a huge focus for all other players at your table and you don't really have a way of dealing with this on a large scale. Sure you can destroy target permanent, but can you keep up with 3 people playing everything they have? Maybe add Propoganda as a deterrent. It should help change people's line of thought from "he's annoying, focus him!" to "he's annoying, but not THAT annoying..."
2 - It seems to lack a focused win condition. Not that it couldn't win, you have a few random big creatures and one or two cards that might grant you win cons (invert the skies/bribery) but it doesn't seem particularly reliable.
I would suggest Woodfal Primus as a potential late game win con that fits with your deck's theme.
Glen Elendra fits well in this deck as well. Both cards have persist and add diversity to your ability to control what is on the field. They synergise better than (for instance) Troll Ascetic or Kodoma (both are great cards that don't really add anything to your deck's theme/synergy).
Treetop bracers are great evasion and get your creatures around reach as well.
More protection for Ferropede (and more Ferropedes in general) would be great, you already have Shielding Plax (great card) but Darksteel Plate might do nicely.
In your decks, with so many "one of" creatures, I would recommend putting cards it that can become copies of creatures (including your opponents creatures). Cryptoplasm and Cytoshape do this (as do many other cards).
I think Eternal Dominion would fit very well with your playstyle and might be a more reliable late game win con.
IMHO Privileged Position is better than Shielding Plax.

About becoming a target:
Never happened so far - usually I am missing the Chisei or I win when that happens or I run out of life/mana before it gets too annoying. Keep in mind that I can only remove one counter per turn so I have to choose between keeping the cumulative upkeep or the life loss in check. Chisei is a legend, so I can't even have two of them in play. In my environment, being able to kill one permanent per turn would make you as many friends as enemies, I just have to pick my targets wisely (read: nasty cards that annoy others as well).
On that note, the card that has drawn the most hate so far is actually that Quicksilver Fountain! I had two games were I drew that early and it dominated the game.

Yes, my kill conditions are "random" but ins ome way that's intentional. When I win via Invert the Skies for example, then I was considered lucky which is exactly what I want. However, I am always open for finishers or other well suited cards. Woodfall Primus sounds great, but I have to trade for it. Same for Glen Elendra. However, I run Troll Ascetic and Kodama for their shroud/hexproof because in my meta spotremoval is rampant.

Recently traded for a Darksteel Plate (still waiting for it to arrive) and might assign it's new home here :)

Eternal Dominion is fun but 10 mana is too much for this deck.

Privileged Position vs Shielding Plax is a tough call. Since my two copies of the Position are occupied here http://www.mtgvault.com/puschkin/decks/cant-touch-this/ I am running with Plax in this deck and don't have to break my head over this decision.

Thx!
