Deck Description

(about the title - "Zauber" is german for "spell"/"magic"/"enchantment")

I don't like tribals, I don't like combos, but I do like to build decks that nobody else has ever come up with, so here we go, a Modern legal casual combo deck involving a tribe you have never even heard of!

It's about the Zuberis which trigger an effect when dying that gets exponentially better the more Zuberis died this turn. However, there are only 7 of them and most of them suck, so I focussed on those that doe damage and draw cards and then added some shapeshifters with changeling (because that means they are also Zuberis). When you have enough you just pop them all via Voracious Dragon, Soulblast or Blaspehmous Act and somebody should die (or at least you'll draw half of your deck and have another go). See a full rundown of combos, tricks and synergies in the How to play section.

It's first draft, though. Areas that need work:
* The manabase is far from finished, however, I ran out of duals and this deck has the potential to stay budget.
* Untypically for me, this runs no protection or removal other than Ego Erasure, but I have no room for non-Zuberis, maybe there is something really clever out there?
* The draw effect of Floating-Dream Zubera is not a may effect. If there are too many of them and other Zuberis, I might end up decking myself when creatures are swiped. What can I do to prevent this? I thought of Elixir of Immortality but I need to have it in play already.
* Not so sure about the Ego Erasure, I can react to stuff but I guess it will rarely contribute because I probably won't cast it during my big turn.

How to Play

FLOATING-DREAM ZUBERA
Main card drawer - however, be aware, you might deck yourself if you have 2+ of them and an assortment of other Zuberis!

EMBER-FIST ZUBERA
Main kill card. You'll know why when you read the rest of the rundown.

RUSHING-TIDE ZUBERA
More draw. Needs to be popped with Blasphemous Act, though.

SHAPESHARER
Wants to be a Ember-Fist when dying but can also be used to copy anything the opponent has in case of emergency. It's a changeling, so it counts as a Zubera even when not activated.

TAUREAN MAULER
Also a changeling and has an ability that makes him grow bigger and fast in multiplayer. That's why he is your alternate road to victory.

VORACIOUS DRAGON
One of 3 methods to kill all your Zuberis in one fell swoop. The nice thing about it (opposed to the other 2 options) is that you'll still have a big creature out after killing the rest. And please note that, for the purposes of the second ability, those changelings count as goblins, too!

SOULBLAST
Method #2 to kill your horde. In this case you also deal damage (massive amounts if a Taurean Mauler is among them!). I mainly added this because it allows you to pop everything at instant speed.

BLASPHEMOUS ACT
Both main defensive line and mass kill option #3.

CRIB SWAP
This is just beautiful - not only does it put another changeling into play (Zuberis! Goblins for the dragon!), it is a changeling tribal instant itself and yes, it counts towards the various Zuberi abilities if you play it the same turn they die!
If you hold a Blasphemous Act, you can use it on opponent's creatures as well (the Zuberis don't care for which graveyard Zuberis are placed).

EGO ERASURE
Some defence in the form of another changeling tribal instant, however, this might not work like planned, it's the first card to cut.

SPRINGJACK PASTURE
Ugh? Why produce Goats? Well, for one this helps casting that all-important Blasphemous Act. Secondly, my changelings are also goats ... so you might pop some to get enough mana for a Soulblast or to empty your hand after drawing way too much cards or just to get that extra life. Also, since you can use the last ability at any time, you can always react to the opponent doing stuff. For exampe if he kills a single Ember-Fist, you can sac more to make the damage bigger.

Deck discussion for Zuberazauber

Came across a similarly themed deck a few months ago (ie, Zubera & shifters). The tribes that were unique to it was certainly one of the hallmarks of the Kamigawa block. Re your problem of potentially decking yourself, if you prefer to use an instant, maybe put in Turn to Frog or Ovinize in place of Ego Erasure. If needed, you could target 1 of your Rushing-Tide Zubera, making it lose all abilities.

Hm ... or I could add Unnatural Selection. It also allows me to turn opponent's creatures into Zuberis in response to a sweeper - with Unnatural Selection I would have total control over how many cards I draw!

*Floating-Dream Zubera. Unnatural Selection can help you get more cards, but since it leaves abilities intact, it won't keep you from decking yourself in the instance you mentioned as being of concern in your deck description...? Artificial Evolution could prevent that, as well.

Hm, I somewhat had Unnatural Selection wrong in my mind. I thought it could change the type of a target creature but in fact it doesn't target at all, it changes all creatures of a certain type. I can still prevent myself from being decked by changing "zubera" into something else, however, then I will draw nothing. Well, depending on the sweeper and situation I might pull off some stacking tricks.

Or ... I just play this like a man and don't worry about decking myself! There are worse ways to go than drawing your entire deck :)

Just realized that Mutavault has all creature types when activated and therefore is a Zubera on command. I just don't own any and they are way to expensive just to slighlty crunch some numbers in a casual deck like this ... added to the sideboard for now (sideboard = cards I consider adding)

Incidentally, would you mind very much taking a look at a deck called "stormy mine", by noobkultur? He's looking for a way to cheat in a creature, & you're far more versed in Legacy/Vintage than I am. That would be a big up, big guy...thanks in advance if you do. :)

Again incidentally, I'm currently for reasons almost (but not quite) w/i my comprehension promoting the album, "Will O' the Wisp," by Leon Russel. Given your funky (cool) style of deck-building, I'm pretty sure you might enjoy it. :)

Leon Russell? That album was released the year I was born ... and he may be a legend in the states but in my country he is almost unknown. I am sure my father didn't have any records of him.
Just checked some songs of that album on YouTube - gotta say that's a tad bit too tame for me. Then again my ears are still recovering from the The Prodigy (with Public Enemy, no less!) concert I attended yesterday :) But guess the roles are reversed there: The Prodigy is big in europe but not in the US. Public Enemy was the supporting act BTW.

Europe & the States are often on entirely different pages, music-wise...at least where the multitudes are concerned. As for Leon, I only ever heard 1 tune by him 'til my friend gave the CD, but it grew on me really quickly, probably because it's not like anything I'm used to. Hope yours ears have recovered. :) That show had to be intense!

I do have one adition that fits very well into this.
ragged veins. It demands that you have black mana, but if you can get that for the deck ragged veins will be a kill when cast just before blasphemous act or it will be nice to play on the creature blocking your taureen or dragon.

This deck is great. I think collected company, green Suns zenith, anything that helps you find the combo pieces is good. I think you get to run pyroclasm too

Wow, finding a card to avoid decking yourself in Modern and avoiding adding a color is really difficult.
Angel's Grace would be my first choice, but also Lich's Mirror and Possessed Portal are (mana expensive) options. Shared fate also would be nice, if you manage to also remove it before you pass. Or Laboratory Maniac, for an easier win condition.
Zur's Weirding also may work, if you manage to sneak a card like the old big eldrazi in your deck, or any other card with the same "hit the graveyard" effect.
That last one would work also with any dredge card, but then you would need to add green.
By the way, both green and white zubera are not so bad, the green one would replenish your side after a board swipe, that would be nice!

never mind Zur's Weirding, I missed the "any other player" part, which led me to believe you could pay the 2 life yourself

I decided to live with the risk of decking myself in favour of a more consistent deck, but thanks for coming up with solutions anyway!
BTW, I retired my Shared Fate deck, so I might put them to use here anyway ...
