Deck Description

***HELP NEEDED*** I am starting to get into the more competitive scene of this beloved game and with pre-PTQs coming up in my area early next year I am looking for improvements on my current deck I am piloting.

This started out as Sultai walkers at the beginning of the new standard but has now evolved into the more mid-range side of things. The results vary greatly at the FNMs I have gone to; 3-1 one night to 1-3 another.

The deck can handle opposing midrange strategies well and aggro is manageable with the Caryatids and Coursers providing a wall in the early game.

My problem deck is Jeskai, of all varieties. The Bile blights are recent additions to the main to allow me to deal with Seekers and Riders so that match-up should improve.

How to Play

Plenty of removal allows control of the board, allowing for either a Sphinx or a Mauler to be deployed as a finisher. Wealth never gets played unless x=5 or more. This is normally a game winner and thinking of adding more in.

Sideboard choices;
Nissa; she was in the main but the 4/4s became less impressive with all the siege rhinos flying about, she now comes in against control to provide constant pressure.

Erebos; Comes in against any form of life gain, be it from Whip or Jeskai Seekers.

Negate/Strokes; come in against any creature light decks, turns the deck into a more recognisable control shell.

Drown; against aggro, self explanatory

Impersonators; against any other walker decks (Mardu, Abzan, Naya). Nothing is sweeter then copying a Sarkhan for the win!

Sultai Charm; the Swiss army knife, can provide additional removal, remove enchantments (banishing light etc) or additional card draw.

Notable exclusions;
Ashiok; was run as a 3 of in my walker pre-curser to the deck but has always disappointed, would prefer to have either mana open for a downfall or deploy a courser.

Thoughts on possible changes -
Really thinking the thoughtseize should be sided, Charm in the main I feel would be more beneficial, any arguments for or against this line of thought?

Lack of Sweeper - Aetherspots fills this spot for now and has a nice synergy with Villanous Wealth, The newly spoiled 5cmc black sweeper will probably come in once Fate Reforged is released.

Any advice is most welcome, really want to put in a good performance in the upcoming PPTQs and this is the deck I feel most comfortable with.

Deck discussion for Sultai Control

I cant say for sure, as I don't know what you tend to take with Thoughtseize, but many decks in this format play maindeck Despise with no trouble. It could be played in addition to or instead of Thoughtseize. Even control decks in this format play Sphinx, Ashiok, Elspeth, and/or Pearl Lake Ancient, so you can hit a card probably 95% of the time you deploy it. It might be worth not losing two life

I was thinking of replacing with just more removal, have 3 charm main and a single silence the believers. the sideboard space from the main decked charms can be taken up with more drown in sorrow to help the aggro match-up

I dunno mate, that will raise your mana curve even higher. I would favor at least 3 copies of Despise, but I trust you as the deckbuilder to know what's best for your deck

Have made some changes, as can be seen from the updated decklist. Removed Thoughtseize and replaced with 3 Sultai Charm and a Silence the believers, also dropped an Aetherspouts for a Hornet Queen, I don't mond having no turn 1 plays as I am really looking for either a turn two Caryatid or the Mana for a Bile Blight. The deck has been performing better being more reactive than proactive. I still might try and squeeze Despise in the sideboard :)
