No, although that's the case for most people, not for me (Unless the deck is based around the companion like this deck) I make the deck then add the companion only if it fits, or I have to take out a filler.

Also a companion could be your wincon/be a actually good part of your deck

I did make a deck where Lutri was just in my sideboard for instant decks

A fun card is creakwood liege, I think it makes, Polukranos unkillable from damage, and if not it's still a cool card.
