Deck Description

"Better for a doun to lose its cenn than its springjacks."

The first interaction I had with Springjack Shepard was digging through one of my best friend's pile of cards back in high school when he was teaching me the game and going, "That's pretty dope, Goat tokens? You have my full attention, Sir!"

For the longest time after, I've had a janky mono-white kitchen table deck where I just tried to build a goat army. About 3 years ago (2017), I fell into the world of EDH/Commander and fell in love. Using my newfound love and my love for jank, I began the development of building a worthy tribute to our Goat overlords using Springjack as its centerpiece.

Here I give you I deck that when you explain to your friends, "Oh, it just makes Goat tokens!" they will laugh and chuckle, and you will be safe for the first game. That is until you show them it is not the goats you will be sacrificing to bring their destruction; no, it is them that will be the sacrifice to satiate our goat overlords. You will instill a life of fear in them, frightened of every time you bring this deck to the table after their first encounter with it.

Eagla ar Fhlaitheas na nGabhar.

How to Play

Being a planeswalker, you have traveled far and collected much knowledge, even knowledge that some did not even know they already possessed.......

You find yourself in the great bazaar of in the plane of Kephalai. Goods from different planes seem to find themselves here, but on this time though, as you browse the many stalls, you feel a pull in your spark. As you try to find the thing that pulls on your spark, growing and tugging you to find it, you come to a stall with many a scroll and texts. You begin to search, and as you do, you finally feel the pulse in your hand as it comes in contact with your skin. You wipe away the dust that has accrued on this book to see is called: "Book of Kith and Kin."

You haggle it away from the trader and as soon as the shopkeep sees you disappear, planeswalked in front of their very eyes. Suddenly you find yourself in a place unfamiliar sight to be seen. Still, in energy, you know to my Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, or whatever it has become after the events of the eventide. You hear from behind you: "I see that the Thoughtweft has finally found our savior. Come with haste walker, Oona is returning, and we need your help." You turn to see an elven like a woman with sleek horns; your spark tells you this is Maralen. As your spark says this, you hear something, not of your conscious; no, this is something else, feeling your hand pulse as you still hold the book that has lead you here. In your mind, you hear: "Come, Maralen can not save us with the power of Ashling and the Crescent alone. You must master the springjack if you are to help us defeat Oona."

And so your story here starts.....

The Thoughtweft has granted you the power to control the Springjack, along with your tools and masteries you have found in your visits to other planes you see to create an army that will defeat Oona and protect this plane and others in the multiverse.

Springjack Shepard - a 1/2 for (3)(W) that has a chroma(The original Devotion ability, Cards with chroma require a count of the number of specific colored mana symbols on cards) ability. This ability being: When Springjack Shepherd comes into play, put a 0/1 white Goat creature token into play for each white mana symbol in the mana costs of permanents you control.

This is gonna be the bread, butter, and demise of our friends and foes. How does it work? Simple, when Shepard comes into play, you are gonna count all of the while mana symbols plus Shepards's, and you get that many tokens.

Example 1: Shepard comes into play, and you have Jazal Goldmane (2)(W)(W) on the field; you would end up with 3 Goat tokens, 1 from Shepard and 2 from Jazal.

Now that we understand our main tools let's look at our support before we get to our win cons.

MORE TOKENS!!!!!!!!

Anointed Procession(Doubles Tokens), Doubling Season(Doubles Tokens and Counters), Panharmonicon(Doubles ETB effects), Parallel Lives(Doubles Tokens), Primal Vigor(Doubles Tokens and +1/+1s), Second Harvest(Doubles all current tokens) is the support tools we have to get the most tokens we can. Each of these cards has the minimum effect of doubling tokens on their own, but together.......yes, this will please the overlords.

Example scenarios:

Example 1: Shepard comes into play; you have on the field Doubling Season. You would get 1 Goat token from the (W) cost on Shepard; this effect creating tokens then triggers Doubling Season, and you get to double this effect. This means instead of 1 Mighty Goat token, you would get 2 Mighty Goat tokens.

Example 2: Shepard comes into play; you have on the field Panharmonicon. Similar to Example 1, you would get 1 Goat token from Shepard. Still, instead of doubling the tokens, Panharmonicon doubles Shepard's Chroma ability, so you get another instance as if Shepard just entered play. This would result in 2 triggers of the chroma, netting 2 Goat tokens total.

Example 3: For this, we are going to show how nutty it gets having just these doubles and how many triggers you will have to keep track of! Shepard comes into play; you have Doubling Season and Panharmonicon on the field. When Shepard comes into play, you have the Chroma Trigger start; from there, you have to choose if Panharmonicons trigger or Doubling Seasons Trigger hits First. While this example is not relevant to the outcome, it is an important habit to track triggers when other players' abilities affect this process or other cards you affect this process(They will soon). For this example, Shepard hits and say we choose Panharmonicon first; we would get our 2 triggers of Shepard; now, the Doubling Season effect can target both triggers of Shepard creating tokens. Giving us, you guessed it, 4 Goat tokens.

As you can see, this can get crazy token production if you have more things in play for Shepard to count for Chroma or more and more Doubling effects, which stack on each other.
(Special Mention the only other way to get tokens in this deck beyond our Shepard is Springjack Pasture (4), and tap you get a token.)

PROTECTS!!!!!

Since we can only have one Shepard to usher in the age of goats on your table, we must be prepared to protect it. Since we are in Green and White, this means we are must either Blink it(Next section will go into more detail) when targeted, bring it back to our hand with Whiteman Lion; retrieve it from the graveyard with Eternal Witness, Breath of Life, False Defeat, Regrowth, Evolution Charm, Noxious Revival; or worse, from exile with Riftsweeper or Pull from Eternity.

WHERE DID IT GO? OH...IT'S BACK.....WAIT A MINUTE IT'S GONE AGAIN!!!!

Since we only have one primary source of mass token production(Sorry Pasture), we need to put the Shepard to work. We will do this by getting that ETB(Enter the Battlefield) effect going off as much as possible! A Blink is how we can accomplish using the chroma effect Shepard has to the max! Blinks, or more properly called flicker, is a theme of taking a card off and then back on the field either immediately or after the end step. This will allow us to potentially get multiple triggers of the ETB(Coupled with our doublers means even more tokens) and potentially infinite!!!!

*Insert maniacal laugh*

THE TIME YOUVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!!!!!

Let us talk about the lands........Just kidding, C-C-C-OMBOOOOOS Time!

Yes, we could have a couple of goats like in our first example. Yes, we could have quite a bit more tokens using our doubling effects. Yes, we can generate even more with our blinks. But is that really enough? NAWWWW it's infinite combo time!

So the components we need for this will need Shepard in play, Any blink/flicker instant, Isochron Scepter, Voltaic Key, Rings of Brighthearth, and Infinite Mana(Basalt Monolith + Rings or Ashnod's Alter + Tokens). Basically, we are going to take a blink/flicker, say Cloudshift, and give it to Isochron Scepter. With this, we have a blink on demand. With this, we can blink anytime we have the mana and Shepard to target. Now with our infinite mana, we can use Voltaic Key to untap Isochron Scepter; using Rings, we can double Voltaic Key's effect to untap both Isochron and itself to rinse and repeat to build our army of goats.

THE GOATS HAVE RISEN!!!!!

Okay, so now that we have our army, how do we actually win, you ask? Well, we have a couple of options:

When your friends and foes are not even worth attacking, Cryptolith Rite + Throne of the God-Pharaoh Will kill your opponents simply by grazing the meadows. (Tap goats for mana, tapped goats deal damage to opponents at the end of turn.)

Make them BUFF. We have many options from Craterhoof Behemoth, Mirror Entity, and Jazal Goldmane, buffing them to be stronger than gods. Potentially with all of the +1/+1 counters a dice dragon would have difficulty keeping track of with Juniper Order Ranger, Cathars' Crusade, Doubling Season, and Primal Vigor. Or Static effects from Akroma's Memorial, Coat of Arms, and Eldrazi Monument.

Finally, make the ultimate sacrifice to our overlords with Daxos, Blessed by the Sun as our Demigod vessel using Ashnod's Alter to make them suffer from the heavens.

After mentions are about our mana base and utility cards, and some minimal control to deal with some eager players. As far as Mana Base, yes, I know there are expensive cards listed, no you don't have to have them, You can have Forests and Plains for your goats to graze on, but it will be a bit slower and provide less utility as well as tutors in this deck, help speed up the finding of our Shepard and combo pieces.

Thank you for coming to my Goat talk. Happy playings and destroying of your friends and foes with Goats! Suggestions, Comments, Critics, Praise of our Goat overlords all welcome!

Added some cards I think are fitting from the DnD set. Unsure if they will make the cut. (You Happen Upon a Glade and Teleportation Circle)
