I like this just fine - it no doubt plays well.
Culling The Weak has long term and late game potential, but it lacks the turn one jump of Dark Funeral. Now, you are probably thinking that you dont need Dark Funeral because you dont need that jump with this deck, it will be able to smash an opponent on turn three or four anyhow.
But what is better than a turn two Fatty??? TURN ONE!!! You need a demon to help you get out of the gate early - Death's Gate that is...
I think you are building around the wrong demon. Demon of Death's Gate is, with the right hand (and not an unlikely hand with this deck), a turn one 9/9 flyer with trample. Throw in Tainted Strike and you have a turn two WIN.

Here is my recommendations:
+2 Ravenous Demon
+4 Demon of Death's Gate
+4 Death Cultist (why not...1 extra ping)
+4 Dark Funeral
+ 2 Tainted Strike

-4 Shadowborn Apostle
-4 Xathrid
-2 Bloodgift Demon
-2 Skirsdag High Priest
-4 Distress (or Sign in Blood...but Id keep 'Blood' in)

It could jump your badassness up to epic proportions.

I can see the power in this deck, I dont see 15,000+ damage....Not saying I doubt you, in fact, I want you to show me so I can do it too!!! Beautiful all the same....

Hello Surewhynot,

As always beautiful. I have nothing constructive to say in regards to this deck, however, I noticed you have Gigadrowse in this deck and not your "Id tap that Deck" (which again, is my fav of yours!)....any reason why? Just curious.

Also, I noticed you having a conversation on Stompy decks up above....I appreciated the definition as I have made a black stompy, but was unsure if it really was in fact stompy at all. I was wondering if you would give it your magic touch. Unlike most decks I build, I would actually like to own this deck and not just play with the idea so your input would be very appreciated.

It absolutley is unstable - but I am not so sure how to make it more well rounded. Im good at focusing, but not sure how to, as you said, more stable. If you have any suggestions - Id be VERY appreceative!

Excellent! You have excellent tutor abilities, but just focus a bit more of card draw - you have the colors for it. That way you are better able to control the game no matter what comes at you. Personal play prefrence, but it wouldnt hurt for sure!

Personally, I find Ichorclaw Myr valuable. It is usually let through for a couple quick poison counters while the bigger stuff is focused on. And having Trample is vital too...Garruk fits this well, as well as some older spells. Just my opinion. That said, this is obviously effective as is!

I have nothing valuable to say - I am just commenting because this is too fun looking to forget about. Gotta give this one a try!

Great job sir!

Good! It was already said, but really - 2x Temple bell is a MUST! That Quest Nihil Stone for the late game. I am not in love with quest, but really, if you dont get your ideal draw, these cards can still win you the game. I hummed and hawed over the worthyness of Temple Bell when it was recommended by surewhynot, but after trying it I will never have a discard deck without it!

Hello Surewhynot - Ive sure missed checking out your decks - this is another beauty!

Not much to comment on, however, personally, Id give it a bit of a heavier spell focus. Throw 4X Echo Mage in and several proliferate spells like Fuel for the Cause and Steady Progress and its like grabbing one of Mario's Super Mushrooms! (oh and I agree with the commentor above - coralhelm commanders is sweet especially if you want to make the deck have a fishier flavor....as a matter of fact. I think I will do that for myself!)

Its a good card in its own right, but what makes it special is that it makes other creatures also unblockable - and all mine are minus the Inkfathom Witch, but she exists more for her "pumping" ability - and she has fear anyhow! But thank you...

You know, enough of your merefolk have island walk as it is...why not captalize on it an make your merefolks unblockable?

Just a thought....as is, Id add:

Wanderwine Hub in addition to Glacial Fortress for mana

Sejiri Merfolk is also a U/W must

Merfolk decks are plain tuff to do. What I think is 'refreshing' about this deck is that it is very straight forward in how it should be played and has a very clean cut in its strategy - not always easy with Merfolk from what I can tell and which is likely why you are underwhelmed by it...you seem to enjoy creating decks with more...flair.

I would also, if I felt so inspired, use this as a template. Its good. Keeping with your islandwalk theme Id recommend the following:

- 4x Merfolk Seastalkers (Your deck relies on being quick and unblockable - they are not quick. And the tap ability frankly sucks for 3 mana (unless you get lucky with 1:30 chance of pulling a training ground). Keep 2 if you must, but aggression is the best defense)

+ 2 Tidal Warrior + 2 Thada Adel, Acquisitor (just to make things more fun!)

- 4x Enclave Elite
+ 4x Grimoire Thief because it is only the most fun Merfolk card EVER! - and it could potentially combo nicely with the Lullmage Mentor

- 4x Halimar Wavewatch
and if you drop Halimar Wavewatch and Merfolk Seastalkers, you really wont have a huge need for training grounds
so - 2x Training Ground
and you can add
+ 3x Stonybrook Banneret and for card draw + 3x Cold-Eyed Selkie.

I dunno, you’re a smarter magic man than I, but I figure this would make the deck more effective and a whole lot more fun!

Fine job! Fine job in deed - The biggest addition Id make is Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon - it wouldnt hurt to have an additional win option (even through poison obviously is not your intent) and a regenerating dragon, with haste if you want it, NEVER hurts. I know it F's with your system, but honestly, Id consider adding more of a poison element in there if I were you. Just food for thought.

That and get some better mana - some duel mana cards and Id increase my red mana as that is by far the most common mana needed and decrease the other two sources.

No shit Haxard....its like a vampire deck with all vamps....so OBVIOUS that they were made for each other!
Douche!

On a more positive and CONSTRUCTIVE note: Good deck. If you have a chance, I recommend you replace 2 Serra Angels for 2 Baneslayer Angels - same mana, infinitely better card. Heck you can drop the Serra Angels all together as they can be replaced with the BS Angel as I already mentioned and do not add much to your theme and overall goal...something to think about.

I'd also drop the Soul's Attendant or Soul Warden set - possibly both, and replace them with Mistmeadow Skulk (much more versatile) and if like a couple of Knight of Meadowgrain...maybe cause it will make you more aggressive.

Id up the Serra Ascendant by another 2 and for sure drop Iona by two. If you want a big bad ass, Id HIGHLY recommend Felidar Sovereign!!! Screw "protection" he comes with his own win condition - and you can get him out WAY faster that Iona.

Id drop the life link set cause, well, they are just not necessary. In their place throw in an Exile set or possibly some Awe Strike, Chastise or coolest of them all, Intervention Pact. Actually, Spirit Link or Spirit Loop are also worth considering if you want to keep creatures without life link in your deck. You can put them on your own creatures to have the same effect as Lifelink, OR you can put it on an opponent and neutralize them.

Also, I am not a big fan of Angel Feathers, but in this deck it may be worth while....

Anyway, there is lots you can do. Have fun and I hope I helped!

I have to agree with the Dash hopes - infinitely better than perplex. Id have to second brainstorm if is wasn't restricted. and it might be worth seriously considering the prankster - its always good for a string of profanity or two. But you have lots or awesome advice here! Personally Id like to just highlights Kharben's - its the advice I would give and take.

Otherwise, nice deck!

Not bad - not that I am a pro at modular - but it looks good.

I have a similar deck and honestly, I could not recommend Etched Champion enough! I like the idea of having skullclamp - as illegal as it is - not that it matters since I have sol ring included in mine already.

I would also drop some of your, "once in a bluemoon" cards like the Blightsteel Colossus and the Mycosynth Golem - they are expensive and even with affinity, the Golem is not that great. But thats just me.

If you like, here is my Modular deck, it plays 'not bad...' but is lacking something, maybe adding skullclamp might speed things up....

You know, of all your decks, this one is still my favorite. I have been trying to emulate you ever since and using you as my greatest source of inspiration. This deck is truly beautiful.

I was reading the comment from Dacenguy, a couple posts above and I too would like to see what you might do with black added in. Way back in November, when this deck was being featured, it actually inspired me to make a B/W version. Reading his comment made me realize that I never did finish it - so here it is: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=126333

As always sir, thank you for the inspiration!

You have a variety of fantastic cards here - and obviously it is effective according to your comments. My only suggestions would be to use the cards that are the most effective and focus your strategy more. You have 25 different cards, not counting lands, so your draw will be fairly random. If you like the excitement of not knowing - awesome! - but it will affect your win ratio.
If it were my deck, I would grab a full 4 Ajani's Pridemate, Souls of the Faultless, Serra Ascendant and Vampire Nighthawk just because they are so darn effective and efficient. Id drop the Null Champion and likely the Mourning Thrull as well.
In regards to your enchantments, Id grab at least one more Sanguine Bond (or more) and drop nice side cards like Painful Quandry (thanks for your advice on that one in my deck btw!).
Again, I not sure what has been working for you. Keep those cards in and throw the rest into the sideboard.

Just food for thought....
