not even close. it has similar mechanics (trample = piercing, exile = banished), but it plays vastly different. a good example is that it is MUCH easier to remove cards from the game and get them back. not needing mana is a plus, but the field size limit really hurts the game sometimes in my opinion.

agreed. he is more an aggro threat. swap in some young pyros or guttersnipes for better effect

yeah its a nice combo. i rarely pull it off despite the amount of mana my deck can produce, mainly because battlesphere dies as soon as i drop it. my friends despise it greatly lol

with fastbond out on turn 1 i have hard cast armada wurm on turn 2 before. its beautiful to see the reactions people give you when you do that. and if you want the deck to be more legal, just swap 2 fastbond for 2 exploration. not as effective but still works!

i have made my opponent literally quit on turn 3 or 4 because of a thresholded hunting grounds. the threat of a free worldspine or any of the big wurms out there is usually enough to make people think twice about casting stuff, and elderscale is just plain evil vs certain deck types

if you want something that does damage like purphoros, then your deck needs a way to make a gawdawful amount of tokens very, very fast. if it doesnt, then he is only for show really. plus while devotion is a great thing, it is far easier to get rid of the gods when they are creatures. consider that most enchantment kill spells say "destroy" and only a few straight-up remove them, and that doesnt gaurantee that your opponent will even have a remove enchant spell in the first place. a good alternative to me would be to take your deck and tweak what myr you are using. i run a WU myr deck and it runs an infinite myr token/colorless mana/damage combo (2 palladium myr + 2 myr galvanizer + myr propagator + myr battlesphere). something like that with purphoros out removes your need for devotion and it does mass damage AND gives you a small army in the process in case you dont kill off your opponent. hope this helps

agreed the modern event deck has lots of goodies and i also highly reccommend it. if you go to cardkingdom.com then you can get said deck for around $60-$70, which is better than trying to get it at a local card shop as it is far cheaper. modern is insanely hard to do right because of all the crazy decks you face. im in the midst of extensive playtesting for my first competetive modern deck myself (http://www.mtgvault.com/drakeraenes/decks/gilder-bairn-cccombo-breaker/).

your deck description combo isnt worth a damn sadly. putting a +1 counter on the archmage wont get rid of the -1 counter on it, so persist will only work once. you need something that straight-up removes the counter for it to work like you are wanting it too

inquisition is good but it is limited. thoughtsieze can nab the high cost threats and abrupt decay handles the smaller threats
