Hmm ... so the great secret of NorthernWarlord's budget decking ... is that he's bad at creating expensive decks. :)

Checking out some of your new decks.

Hehehehe .... do you think your opponents will concentrate on Heroes' Bane or Angelic Skirmisher if both are on the field?

Hmm ... so they help fetch the specific land you need. And they also slightly increase the chances of getting a non-land card, since 1 more card than normal is taken out of your deck.

On the other hand, most fetch lands bring in tapped lands (that's a loss of tempo). Also, the best time to use them is after you are assured of having the lands you need ... and in the meantime, fetchlands aren't the best at producing mana themselves.

Certain abilities benefit from fetchlands (landfall, etc.) and certain abilities will screw them over (ob nixilius, archive trap, etc.).

Overall, I think it is mostly a matter of preference whether one uses them or not.

This deck is one that could truly benefit from them, since there are so many lands. They could also serve as cannon fodder for Mr. Borborygmos or Gruul Turf (latter not here yet).

It's Okay Sorin ... a lot of people on the vault seem obsessed with fetchlands. I've got SO many comments, even on decks with excellent mana bases. Unless it's a mono-colored deck, someone suggests I add fetchlands.

Personally ... I think a better option for getting the right mana might be running a blue/red version of this deck, minus Borborygmos and with Seismic Assault. Two colors would ensure you get what you need, but ...

... Treasure Hunt and Zhur-Taa Druid seem to solve most mana issues you would conceivably have.

Gruul Turf and similar cards might be a good choice for this deck, since they result in no tempo loss if you play them on tapped lands, and give back a basic land for sacking.

Alright ... swiftfoot boot, whispersilk cloak, and company are going in to protect my commander.

I only can use one of each of those cards .... and will put them in if they don't break the budget.

Hmm ... maybe age is a factor. It does help out quite a bit ... but wouldn't wisdom get a bonus as well?

I used the standard rolls .... do you want us to use some other method? I thought my rolls were ridiculously lucky. I re-rolled them twice because I though they were too high the first two times. Maybe it's just that site.

Maybe the fumes got to them. :)

Online Games CAN usually be paused ... MMOs or Arcade are the ones that can't, unless you want your friends to hate you. :)

Understood. I WAS trying to make it low, but considering the sheer amount of ramp as well ... I will flood myself often.

I know quite a bit about late-game white cards, but do you have any suggestions for green monsters?

And would spells with strive be a pretty good way to burn off some of that mana?

So ... the cards aren't crap; the mana base needs some work.

I agree about nullifuy though ... it is hard to get UU in a duel deck, which means one must take more of other spells.

What's the Issue with electromancer? It makes all the Instants except shock cheaper, and UR is not that hard to get, even with the current less-than-optimal mana base. If you are referring to that fact that it makes dissipate and resolve into UU spells ... that's those spells' fault, don't blame poor electromancer!

Oh great northernwarlord ....

I humbly beseech you to consider aiding myself in the crafting of an EDH deck of low cost.

With that otta the way ....

Is it physically impossible for you to create an expensive deck!?

I would trade rage reflection for assault strobe .... because ... SCIENCE! Really though, it seems to come out too late to make much of a difference except to your commander .... and since he has trample, curse of bloodletting might be a better choice. I don't know what it's cost is, but curses are hated on in general. Besides, are you really going to play multiplayer?

If you really want to be cruel, and use all those lands of yours, Budoka Gardener might be a good choice. He's a 2/1 splashable chump blocker or spell magnet in the worst case. On a good day, if he comes out turn 2 ... he will have 8 lands on turn 5 (considering your deck search for lands) so you could summon your commander on turn 4 or 5! The craziness doesn't stop there ... on turn 7 he will proceed to put 10 10/10 Elemental Creature tokens onto the battlefield! Just imagine the look on your opponent's face when you combine that with Gruul Ragebeast. Overkill much?

Here's his calling tag if you're interested:

Aside from that craziness, abundant growth is not a bad way to ensure you have the correct types of mana.

Oh, and walking atlas is a great mana-ramp and land-playing dude that found find a nice home in this deck.

P.S. I believe Borborygmos' famous line is, "Not Gruul? Then die!", found on the Gruul Charm. In fact, he's so badass, he can turn a land into a lighting bolt.

I don't think most people expect a pesky archive trap when they see ghost quarter, precisely because of it's unreliable nature in forcing a deck search. Your opponents will start worrying when Maralen hits the field (she also works wonders with Ob Nixilus, which is what your opponent is probably worried about).

On the other hand, Ghost Quarter is used to destroy their most important land, possibly a multicolored one, in exchange for one land of your own. Not a bad deal, especially if they drop the equivalent of Tolarian Academy on turn one along with 5 artifacts, and that land needs to die. Or Cathedral of War, Emeria the Sky Ruin, etc.

Ghost Quarter should slow them down enough for Maralen to be on the field. Once that happens ...
