Deck Description

*UPDATE 9/27/13*
Updating the deck with the new Theros stuff. I love a lot of the cards out of this set. Here is a list (and reasons) to why I am switching what I am.

Dropped
Temporal Extortion - never got it to go and everybody will pay the half.
Dark Prophecy - I risk to much with the life loss after a board wipe.
Sepulchral Primordial - I never got the use out of it that I thought I would, plus he is a hefty costing spell for what is normally very little.
Garruk Relentless - Never saw the use in playing him as he is needed. He always just died before I could really use him.
Skirsdag High Priest - He only saw late game use, and by then he was useless.
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord - I never got him super big, and never wanted to sacrifice for his ability.

Added
Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx - Yes Cabal Coffers for anycolor, you will be in ALL of my EDH
Nylea, God of the Hunt - I like the trample and buff ability, I can also see in a pinch scavenging a 6/6 for 4
Bow of Nylea - I love the deathtouch, and the other abilities are just icing on the quiver.
Reverent Hunter - I want to try this card because I think I have a great devotion.
Reaper of the Wilds - Scrying as often as possible is something I really want to try, and the fact that she makes a great blocker really helps me.
Liliana of the Dark Realm - I really like her use in the deck of bringing up lands and ramping up mana.

Deck discussion for Varolz, the Scar Striped EDH

Looks nice, I've been looking into building a Varolz EDH myself. Cards I would include that you don't would be. among others:
Creakwood Liege
Green Sun's Zenith
Momentous Fall
Profane Command

And there's probably alot of nonbasic lands worth including, like Temple of the False God, Bojuka Bog, Phyrexian Tower,
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth etc. Also, the more of these utility lands you run, the better Sylvan Scrying and Expedition Map becomes

Thanks for the comment. I completely forgot how great the Liege is and although I'm not a giant fan of Momentous Fall it certainly fits here. I actually like the idea of getting Birthing Pod in here over Green Sun's Zenith as well. Other than the lands you did put in the comment, would you let me know of any other utility lands to use? This will be my second two color EDH ever BUILT and I've not really got the lands ratio down yet.

More lands, hmm.. Crypt of Agadeem, barren more, shizo death's storehouse, gilt-leaf palace, spawning pool, llanowar wastes, that's what I can come up with right away

Thanks so much for that. I totally forgot about Gilt-leaf and Wastes. I also realize I forgot verdant catacombs as well. Shizo seems like it would be very powerfull in here though im not so sure about Crypt. I think i'll be losing creatures out of the graveyard for scavenge or to simply put them back on the field.

This is just me, but Slitherhead just doesn't do enough to be productive, and same with Force of Savagery.
I might suggest (as you saw from my list) either or both of the Hunted Creatures, Kokusho the Evening Star and Plague Boiler as options in their places.

The way I look at Force of Savagery is that I am getting 5 +1/+1 counters for free. Plus his low cost lets me cast him and he sacs himself to anything such as Butcher, Gravepact, or Savra. He also causes evolve on Gyre Sage. I can see your point on Slitherhead but im never one to pass up a good one drop. Especially if it means one dropping sac fodder and a free +1/+1 counter.

Deathrite shaman would be a much better one drop, right?

He would be a good one drop in here. The problem is that you wouldn't want to sac it for regeneration, and I would have to pay to scavenge him at all.

Viscera Seer is a good utility one-drop who can feed into Butcher and Gravepact. Experiment One is another good one, as he's more likely than not gonna stick around.

Viscera Seer would be fairly decent in this deck actually. I was also gonna try to get a Blood Artist in the deck to see if that really worked out or not.

With any form of a sac outlet as well as Butcher/Pact, Artist is always a good choice

Got a little play testing in tonight. My win condition came out to be a field lock of sac engines and Pact and Artist to win. Having Sheoldred helped keep Artist alive.

what about vigor? might be a good card in here, it does: If damage would be dealt to a creature you control other than Vigor, prevent that damage. Put a +1/+1 counter on that creature for each 1 damage prevented this way. When Vigor is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library.

time for all the counters XD

I have been trying to find a spot for Vigor in here. He works so well in this deck, especially with Fungal Behemoth. I think I might end up taking Hell's Caretaker out, I am not a big fan of the upkeep restriction on that.

i like inkmoth nexus in this deck it can be a very good win condition if you have some cheap scavenge

I like that idea actually. It would give me just one more win condition. Plus keeping the +1/+1 counters safer on a non creature land will be pretty funny.

Since you asked me to take a looksee here, I'm doing so. Green/Black's not my forte, but I'll see what I can piece out.

I've played around with Spawnwrithe. He's a cute trick, but his fault comes in that he's too innately small to do anything, really. Varolz won't give you the exponential boon if Spawnwrithe's in the bin, either, so you're not getting much from him.

I like Skullbriar, as well, from the command zone, but not so much from a 1 of 99 perspective. Since he keeps his counters, I actually kind of want to see him piloting this deck with Varolz and Corpsejack Menace in the 99 as an engine to enable insane commander damage later on.

Mimic Vat, I don't like for you in this deck. You want to have things hit the bin, not get Exiled under the Vat.

Death's Presence is likewise underwhelming. I almost always wish it was a different card when it comes up in decks I play it in. Sometimes, it gets nutty, but rarely.

Other cards I'm noting that I don't see, but want to:

Fauna Shaman - You want to pitch things to Scavenge them back, and you need tools to make it happen. Fauna Shaman tutors for those tools, and she lets you pitch something you'd want to scavenge up, such as your Death's Shadow or Force of Savagery, for something you want on the board as a unit.

Krosan Grip - You're in Green. This is an absolute must. Instant speed Artifact/Enchantment hate with Split Second, making it uncounterable.

Ring of Kalonia - This goes even moreso if you switch to Skullbriar at the helm, but giving Trample, as well as counters each upkeep if it's green, is a huge bonus.

Abrupt Decay - Even in EDH, you still hit a ton of stuff CMC 3 or less, including some pesky generals. Non-counterable, as well.

Other options:

Triumph of the Hordes - Easiest cheap win you could think of. Overrun for infect. Your group will hate you, or laugh hysterically. One of the two.

Increasing Savagery - This goes moreso if you push to Skullbriar, but the card is nuts. I've Flashed it back on a Gyre Sage and had an absurd level of mana to play with. It goes really well in a deck that brings +1/+1 counters to play.

Worldly Tutor - Simple creature tutor. 1 CMC, easy, Instant speed. Never a dead draw.

I'll have to agree with you on Death's Presence and Mimic Vat. The few times I have played them they ended up failing me in the long run.
Spawnwrithe was just added as a passing thought of "i wonder if scavenging onto him so he slaps you and drops a token is worth it" So far, no.
Skullbriar however works SO well in this deck. Not as the general but as a small drop that keeps his counters. If I scavenge a few creatures onto him or even one big one, if he is destroyed I don't lose those counters. I just re-scavenge off of hm for b/g.

Krosian grip is sitting on top of the deck RIGHT now just waiting for its eventual place.
I have never personally been a fan of fauna shaman, but looking at how the deck has been playing she might not be a bad choice. I see myself holding big cost cards early for some reason, throwing them away for what I could use might not be a bad choice. Especially with the little bit of recursion I do have in the deck.
I had not honestly thought of Ring of Kalonia actually, trample is something I could desperately use more of actually. More than once trample has been the deciding factor between a win or a loss.
Abrupt Decay is sitting with the deck waiting for its spot as well.
Triumph would make me the biggest threat in every match, there is almost an unspoken rule of infect must always lose.
Increasing Savagery has been suggested multiple times by my circle and I've really thought about it but I just couldn't see spending that much mana for counters in this deck.
I need a playset of Worldly Tutors! They would help in so many of my decks.

Thanks so much for your input. I can see myself tweaking this a little bit more this weekend.

Also, one card I missed last night that is just great utility in EDH: Acidic Slime. You can hit him from any sort of creature tutor, and when you absolutely need his effect, 5 mana is never too much to pay.

From your feedback on my comment, the changes I'd make straightaway are:

Out: Spawnwrithe, Death's Presence, Mimic Vat

In: Krosan Grip, Fauna Shaman, Abrupt Decay

Did those changes last night. Also ended up dropping Grave Titan for the Ring. He never really pulled his weight other than being a deathtouch token drop, but by the time I got to him he just became a powerful blocker.
