The mana curve /is/ smexy ;D Thanks to you, et al., on buddysystem's deck for introducing me! I'm actually quite fond of the helm -- it somehow magically grows to fit Soulgorger's gigantic metal skull, then a few moments later shrinks to fit Pit-Skulk, or even smaller to fit the tiny head of a Bird. :P It's actually the recursion that I like, over a one time pump spell. It is the less effective replacement to Rancor, and add's another layer to Pit-Skulk to get around Goyf wars, Reliquary's rise to power, and such. Pit-Skulk is really the secret champion of this deck, more than Soulgorger & Goyf. Wreath of Geists simply beaks that guy!

I'm curious to know, from Wumps or SWN, how this deck actually plays out on a consistent basis? There are a few issues I have with the land base containing so many situationaly useful mana sources and sources of colorless mana, that I could foresee a decent percentage of hands turning into mana screws.
I haven't played it yet, but I can already see some synergistic issues that might arise. I'm hoping there's something working for it though, I'd like to develop the idea. Seeing Counterbalance in modern would just be neat :)
It works well on its own, can be cast effectively with or without Heartless summoning, buffs with Tempered Steel, and is another prime target for Wreath of Geists (along with Birds, Vault Skirge, & Hover Myr) -- the latter of which also works well with Heartless Summoning as well as Day of Judgment. Overall this isn't the best deck I could run HS in, but the little synergies make it fun to play for a while :)
So. I've been playing this post-update, and this deck /kicks ass/. I love the response I get from opponents after playing Soulgorger, and the first thing they notice is an 8/8 on turn 2 or 3 "What the... is that!?" XD
To be honest, Vorenclex is very underwhelming, and as good as Acidic Slime's removal is, he's still a 2/2. The problem I see here is that your deck is stranded without Heartless Summoning. I think you'd do well to add more 1-drops such as Birds of Paradise, and Wreath of Geists would be viable as well.
I hear Nether Void is a bit dry and melts if salted. Undiscovered Paradise is pretty tasty though, when left linger in the Smokestack for a day or two.
I had considered Kessig Cagebreakers for mine as well, but I too am trying to keep my mana curve slim, and I'm already too fond of Bloodgift Demon to drop him from the list. I can say, I've had the pleasure of facing one of those buggers, and it ain't pretty!
Teysa is definitely the best general among this list, imo. White and black is a strong color combination with a lot of removal to begin with, and then there's Teysa.. I had never considered Vorosh as a commander, though, but I can see how good he can be. Another great color combination as well.
Gravebond (this creature gets +1/+1 for each creature in your graveyard) Deathbond (this creature gets +1/+1 for each creature in each graveyard) Shenaniganbond (this creature gets +1/+1 for each creature in each graveyard you can see from your seat) Jamesbond (Sean Connery or Daniel Craig?)
What this really needs is some Rune-Scarred Demons. It's a 5/5 flier for 5, that also get's you a 4/5 for 0 :D
Wreath of Geists and Splinterfright each scale in power based on the number of creatures in my graveyard. But.. in light of those new cards, I had completely forgotten about Bonehoard! I think with some tweaking it could fit right into the build ^-^ Thanks!
The most concerning problem I have with this deck is the lack of trample. Being modern, I lose access to Rancor and Berserk, which are what make Soulgorger a viable threat. Without them, he's just an 8/8 beater that only sticks around for a turn or two and can be chump blocked. Hexproof and haste are nice and all, but without trample he's more harm than good. I replaced Bellows with Vines to make up for the lack of Boots, as well as provide pump -- which is important to push Birds and Pit-Skulk as additional threats. Finally, Martyr of Spores was just there to test her out. I replaced her with Uktabi Drake, which is an all around more solid pick. He's an easy 2 damage to trigger Bloodthirst on the Pit-Skulk, and can be sacrificed to Soulgorger before I have to pay his echo cost, if I choose not to keep him around.
Orchard fits nicely in certain decks, usually combo. Cascade has been using it more often in Modern, I've noticed. Thought I was going against a net-decked Stronghold until I saw I saw them start cycling cards :P
I kill things with Birds of Paradise :)
Damn it! :P Now that'd be n^44th power tokens generated per turn.
And right there is something I've learned to love about Vault Skirge since adding it. I actually had this exchange one game: Solar Flare: "Doomblade your Skirge." Me: "No can do, chief, it's black. The only legal targets are your Sun Titan and Phantasmal Image." Solar Flare: "Oh! Crap, I wasn't paying attention, can I take that back?" Me: "Sure." Solar Flare: "Thanks, Go For The Throat on your Skirge." Me: "Sorry, mate, can't do that either. Would you like to try again?"
It could work, but generally most of my creatures will die on their own. Either by attacking / blocking or Smallpox. Otherwise I don't really /want/ them to die, just doesn't bother me if they do/ The card draw could be nice, though, but that's what Bloodgift is for ;P
Actually, you can cast Superion with the mana generated by Priest of Urabrask.
Which saddens me greatly :3 I've been playing with them on Cockatrice, and they are /amazing!/
