When playing with x-spells, you need to play more mana than your opponent or they will win by playing 1 spell at a time if it's a counterwar. More mana will also speed up the dragon. I usually use 22-24 mana. Or you can try to use stuff like ancient tomb to get ahead.

Well, try using the exact numbers that I listed above. These two decks are vastly different, so the mill they share in common must be what works within modern. Or at least, thats a theory to start with :)

Well, the aggro-version got 1st place.

Well, deathrite shaman helps your mana, AND removes pesky stuff like emrakul or past in flames.

Don't fear the wand's price. Use it intelligently. Pay life 2-3 times during the early game where you want to lock them down as fast as possible. Then just use the wand to look at their top, and then use millstone/grindstone to remove stuff you don't want them to get. :D

There's more, to the story. He won the first game because his deck was basically bolts & critters, I won the next through surprise value, and third game he also won despite him playing a jackal pup again, and me holding fire covenant in my hand :(

No chronic floodings, and no curse of the bloody tomes, both are very bad cards.
Instead use some of the more heavy stuff...
